Efficiency and Performance of an AC Unit

12/19/2011 7:54 AM

Dear All

As a requirement for choosing an effient airconditioning type/ model I usually review the COP and EER along with the electrical requirement of the unit. Obviously nowadays we are dealing with inverter types, however I would like to ask you what further parameters one should note in order to choose a good a/c unit. I also take note of the units noise emission.

Thanking you in advance

Ryan

Ease of filter replacement...Warranty....Serviceability...Design problems...If you want to know how good an a/c unit is, ask a mechanic, the guy that works on them is the foremost authority...

I used to subscribe to "Comsumer Reports". (Not an endorsement)

They are unbiased, I think, and may be a good source of information.

I'm still subscribed to Consumer Reports online. Let me know if you want me to have a look.

Before making any major purchase, I also spend a significant amout of time looking at online reviews and prices from a variety of sources.

Many of the new units have a great SEER rating, but the quality is garbage.

In addition to the points mentioned here includign SEER consider to check the type of refrigerant used is it ecofriendly?. Check the materials used for various components.

A few other specifications/features that you may want to check into:

- tonnage of unit

- compressor type (number of stages, scroll type, reciprocating type etc.)

- condenser motor (single speed, two speed, variable)

- refrigerant type and if you'll need to change out the coil as a result

- type of control required

- if it has high/low pressure switches

- whether it has a compressor blanket

- type of thermostat that will be required (special two stage thermostat, etc.)

- does unit have diagnostics system

- furnace compatibility and SEER rating achieved from this

- cabinet construction

- warranty

After choosing a unit you will then want to weigh cost versus performance to see if the payback is acceptable.
