Siemens PCS7 is a DCS or Not?Why

12/21/2011 4:11 AM

Hello all,

Siemens PCS7 is a real DCS or not?As well as I know you can describe different TAGs to under the different CPU doing anything on DCS system as a global database result. What about on PCS7? Is there anything else differences between DCS and PCS7 do you know?

Ask this guy:

The PCS 7 system from Siemens is a DCS. All the features and functions needed to be a DCS are designed into the product. We compete head-to-head with the other major vendor's DCSs, including Honeywell's Experion PKS, Emerson's Delta V, Foxboro's I/A Series, Yokogawa's Centum CS 3000 and ABB's System 800xA.

Some of the components of PCS 7, for example, S7-400 series controllers and WinCC software, are also sold separately and compete directly with other vendor's PLC and HMI products. This can cause confusion. I'm interested in learning why you're considering PCS 7 for a power application, though. PCS 7 is designed for the chemical process industries (chemicals, refining, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, industrial gases, glass, cement, etc.)Siemens latest DCS for power applications is the Siemens Power Plant Automation T3000 (SPPA-T3000). The System has been designed to perform power plant automation tasks: turbine control, boiler control including boiler protection, balance of plant (BOP), etc.

Can Siemens PCS7 be considered as a True DCS?

Dear Victor,

Thank you very much for your information. What about time stamp on digital input cards?I also use all DCS ( ABB, Honeywell and Metso ).I have no enough knowledge about PCS7.We produce paper. And also I wonder about data exchange between different CPU's.I mean Can I use some tag from one of CPU to another CPU without doing anything.( needed describe IP address etc?)And also Can I add a new I/O card under power directly? ( Without hardware describing? etc?)

I'm not Victor. I just pasted his comments here. Victor worked for Siemans in 2007.

Isn't this just semantics?

Call it a banana. It doesn't matter - what it's called is trivial compared to what it can be used to do.
