Hollow Circular Shafts Under Compression

hey guys;

i am doing an assignment on steel columns, my question is:

- i have to evaluate the section capacity of a hollow circular cross section, should i use the gross area or net area in my calculs ? also same issue with second moment of inertia...

your response is much appreciated !

Tornado is quite correct. Use the Net Area (in.^2), Moment of Inertia (in.^4), and Radius of Gyration (in.) in the calculations. These values are tabulated in the Steel Manual or steel manufacturer's literature.

Q: You do know how to use the AISC Steel Manual, don't you?

Note: Not to confuse things (and other issues), but you only use the Gross Area (etc.) if the interior void of a round, square or rectangular steel column is filled with a suitable concrete mix, then the entire section becomes a "Transformed Composite Section".

thank you all :), it felt like a stupid Q but i was abit confused !, well i know how to use the eurocode which is most relevant to me :P, thanks again :)
