High Tech HUD Display in Any Car!

12/24/2011 7:52 PM

Hello,

I just started thinking about the idea of a high tech, heads up display simular to Iron mans HUD in the movies.

Some of the key features could include:

GPS/ Route info display

Current speed in MPH with gps integration

Heading, Climate, and Time info

Integrated lazer distance finder to show the imediate vehical in front (Their speed, and distance from you, this could better judge whats really happening with the car ahead of you)

Basicly imagine driving a car with Tony Stark's Hud displayed on your windshield!

Please let me know if yall have any ideas about hardware, or software, or how to integrate these systems? Im not an engineer so Im afraid Il probly never be able to do this project =[

I run back roads a lot, so I loved the Infrared concept so I could keep deer out of my grill.

Most of the list you put up I think is useless (IMHO) BUT I have noticed an interesting behavior trait.

I just switched to a car that has rolling average MPG in the driver's display (and in the process switched from a vehicle that got 20 mpg to one that gets 30+mpg) and even as good as that is, I find my driving style changing to maximize mpg.

Is that all that's required to change behavior? Or is it my slightly obsessive engineer personality?

Her indoors owned a '03 VYII Holden Commodore Ute (Pontiac G8 Utility), which had this feature (they've been common as part of the instrumentation on Oz built GM & Ford cars since around 2000). Whenever I jumped in the drivers seat the average Litre/100km(MPG US) would be in the high 12's (18.4 MPG)by the time I'd park the ute it would be down to around high 9's(24MPG).

Now I'm no slow coach but I didn't spank it any where as hard as she did..

We've since replaced the ute with a Peugeot 205 Si which averages around 6 litres/100km (near 40MPG) She hasn't slowed down any but its been easier on my wallet...The fuel consumption readout didn't affect how she drove the ute, though it did present me with the "intellectual" challenge to bring the number down..

Integrated lazer distance finder to show the imediate vehical in front (Their speed, and distance from you, this could better judge whats really happening with the car ahead of you)

How is that better than using your own eyes?

OK as the input to a collision avoidance system but do you need this data displayed?

MPG gain that edignan related to us is interesting. If it's in your face you will notice.

Feedback works for engineers.

There should be a device to stop the vehicle if driver fall sleep or vehicle goes off road.

If vehicle goes of road then the vehicle will stop anyway.

Need to stop before it goes off road or driver nods off.

Have you got a predictive algorithm in mind?

Similar to the "deadman's handle" in trains and "auto pilot" in air crafts,we should develop a device for road vehicles.

An auto pilot just flies the air plane. The pilot could be asleep and it wouldn't care.

Thats what we call the gas pedal. Stop pressing down and the car stops moving.

I still like the Magnetic strip theory, you pull on to I-40 and put the automobile on auto-drive and distination lets say OKC and set back and play cards it puts you to the correct off ramp and parks you in a rotisery round house and you chose to take a bus or release to drive on your way. All this information could be in the strip and visioned on a screen..Engineers could go wild designing this project..No wrecks, no Highway patrol, I just can't contain myself...

If I recall correctly GM developed a HUD that used an IR image of the road a head augmented with speedometer (which is the most important "legalistic" information required) readout. Cost of the technology was the stumbling block, couldn't make it cheap enough for the bean counters.

Personally I feel that there is sufficient distraction within the cabin of the average motor car (Automobile) to keep the average zombie commuter from getting bored. Though for the rest of us its frustrating that they don't keep their minds on the job at hand. (Subject for another thread entirely)

Most of the modern car fleet certainly the common garden variety ones in the western hemisphere, have a plethora of various computer processors engaged in ensuring the car company won't get sued for the owner/drivers stupidity. Adding HUD to that mix while not difficult, would have to pass the Beancounter/Legal liability requirements to make it into mainstream products.

That's not to say making a aftermarket retro fittable kit would not be popular amongst the doof doof/drifter crowd especially if you add db or G force measurements ...

Best price I could get was looking like several thousand from the junkyard.

Cadillac led with this, but as you say couldn't push the unit cost down.

This seems like a good idea. You won't have to take your eyes off the road to read your text messages or Kindle.

Its just great!!! You won't have to out run the cops, You can just speed home and your GPS will tell where you were and how fast you were going. Then thay can send you a ticket to your home!!! Gives the cops more time for coffee & donuts!!!

Good idea!!! not

If you want a hi tech display system, check out Team Eagle in Canada. This site shows a separate display, But I thought they offered a HUD.

The DEVS system is better, and worse than a $99 GPS. It can allow accurate plowing of snow in 0 visibility conditions, and yet it can not navigate by addresses.
