How to Build a Car

12/26/2011 8:19 PM

Back in the days of school we had a school project of building a car. We build the main body out of plywood, Then we covered plywood in chicken wire. Then we mixed flour & water and formed the car. Then we put layers of fiberglass & reasion. Then we removed the plywood from bottom side, and with rubber mallets hit the side of car till all the plaster and chicken wire fell out. we got a frame, eng, trans, wheels from junk yard the sports car sold over 8,000.00 for the school fund. back in the 60s that was a lot of money. the next year we built an airplane thats another story.

makes you think why schools aways need money, the kids should do something!!!

Automobiles started out being built of wood. Wood is a very versatile material; a renewable resource. The British mosquito bomber of WWII and Howard Hughes "Spruce Goose" were built of plywood as were countless landing craft and PT boats. I would like to see some new cars built of woodl. I think there's enough room on our highways for a wood car.

You can add the fabulous English Marcos sports car from the 1960's to the list of wooden cars.

The car we built looked close to this, but our car was a convertible, this car is metal our car was fiberglass. read the story... plywood was used as a main form the chicken wire & plaster was all removed leaving a fiberglass body. No wood in this the car only on the dash board fine wood there only.

I hope this get to the point!!!

I could see the kids building cars that get 50 + miles to the gallon and being shut down by the oil and auto industries can't you ?

Or taking old 48 volt dc motors and wiring up an electric car that does not catch fire and go up to 100 miles on a charge using an old Pinto frame of Chevette .

I find school fund raising to be a little odd. That's what taxes should be for. I do agree that students should engage in practical projects to get a taste of Reality 101. Problem is we need teachers who are versed in Reality.

I'm often in wondering if the 'tax' dollar is being spent to operate the school or are they operating off the interest paid on these dollars..but beyond that a few housing projects are completed to the betterment of the department doing the building and several students are getting an education of construction industry..and the avaibility of different employment available. Finding teachers with the education in particular fields is turning to Vo-Tech or alternate school projects for the slow learner or untaught..We all suffer from the uninspred young people..
