Small Heat-Resistant Casting

05/01/2007 1:13 PM

I'm looking to make 12 off 4.7 inch diameter x 1/8 inch thick x 1/4'' wide piston rings that are required to work at high temperature (400 +deg Celsius). Material is 'open' but needs to suit temp, and maintain some reasonable mechanical properties. Something like Stellite 6 or Haynes 25 might do, but where can I can a one-off casting from such a material for onward conventional machining? Wire-eroding from plate is a possibility but offers so far are horrendously expensive.

The most likely way to cast that part in stellite is investment casting. By the time you pay to make a mold, have the parts cast, straighten them ( a necessary process in casting such parts), heat treat them, then try to machine them to the required tolerences, you are going to pay a lot more than you would if you wire EDM them from plate. The wire EDM will hold the required tolerences easily and may even be able to do the split in the ring. The only cheaper way I can think of would be if you can find the material in round bar stock. Then you can turn them on a lathe and part them off. Stellite is a nasty material to machine. I would bet on the wire EDM ( Electrical discharge machining).

Thanks Gary - nice site by the way! - I'm inclined to agree with your analysis.

there are high temperature cast steels by IMI of UK which is or was part of ICI of UK. their NIMONIC steels range for high temperature applications are being used for Aeroengine cast components. you may get the desired materials chemical and physical data on web-site. Good Luck.

ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries)

IMI (Imperial Metal Industries)

there are high temperature stellite castings are avalable as per your drawing by Dellero of Germany, their stellite range for high temperature applications are being used for furnace components by many steel plants. you may get the desired materials chemical and physical data on web-site. Good Luck.
