Hammertek Elbows

Does anyone have any experience using The HammerTek Smart Elbow in Abrasive Applications?

1) Can it be used in Shale Gas Production that has both frack sand and normally occuring sand after the sand seperators?

2) Can the elbow be hardcoated or stellited to reduce wear and increase longevity?

We find that normal carbon steel trim in certain valves can only last a couple of hours before replacement is needed.

In some cases, certain choke valves with tungsten carbide trim are only lasting a few days before replacement.

I would presume that in any case, the Smart Elbow would be cheaper.

After 3 or 4 months of production the wells settle down and a much longer life is expected.

I was driving yesterday and musing about mining information from CR4.

I wonder why company's sales staffs do not search the forums more for leads.

I cannot remember a company contacting on line or in my case, off forum with detail.

I see a great opportunity lost and so great that I even pondered starting a discussion about it.

These are the same type elbows used in sand transport systems in foundries. The principle is that the sand collects in the pockets and form a barrier to prevent the moving sand from impinging on the steel wall.

I used to have a rubber lined 8' diameter sweep elbow at the top of a 25 foot silo that was rubber lined from the original installation. After replacing the rubber lining a couple of times which involved bringing in a crane to remove it I asked the sand delivery driver what most people did. The next time it leaked I took it to our welder and he bent a C channel to match and welded it onto the OD of the elbow. When I took the silo down 10 years later it was still solid and had never leaked.

The sand packs up against the elbow and forms a renewable barrier from the transported sand. Also found that LDPE and sometimes HDPE stood up better against the abrasive nature of dry foundry sand than did steel.

There were several suppliers of pneumatic sand transport systems for abrasive transport who you might want to inquire about. Each has their own methods and it often depends on the medium and whether it's dilute phase or dense phase.

Awesome, could you provide a sketch?

I have seen the elbows used in chemical plants extruding pellets for the aftermarket, but never got to see inside one that was in use.

They seemed to be in favor for this.

Don't have a sketch but just visualize a sweep elbow and bend a channel (about one inch less in width then the pipe diameter) along the outer diameter surface and then weld in place and cap off the ends. As the pipe erodes away the area between the inner part of the channel and the outer wall of the pipe will fill with sand. This doesn't eliminate the erosion it just slows down the process. Ours was an intermittent use (pneumatic sand truck unloading)so it may not be applicable to your situation.

qaqcpipeman have you tried a "cushion tee" aka "target tee" for your application ? WFI and WOI manufacture these and had success in this application. I dont know the pressures you are faced with but these tees are higher pressure.
