Miniature Absolute Pressure Sensor

05/02/2007 10:58 AM

I am searching for a miniature pressure sensor to read vacuum.

Absolute mode, any excitation or output will do.

It needs to be 0.1" round or so. Is there anything out there that is fairly cheap?

To the right of your screen (you may need to scroll down) you will see at red haired fellow doing an imitation of E.T. (in reference to a Spielberg movie starring Drew Barrymore). Left mouse button click on the guy and you will enter one of the best sites on the internet. Try their serach engine, I'm sure you will find something that meets your needs in no time at all.

Richard L. is right, MOREIRC. One of the great things about GlobalSpec is that you can search by product specification. Check out this link to spec out a pressure sensor.

Hi Do you need just a sensor or a complete meter, if you need a meter just try www.eurolec-instruments.com

Yes, Global Spec will have companies that manufacture these sensors- yet, unless you can convince them that you are prototyping for a high volume sale- you likely will not get them interested in sending you only one unit. Better use a part that is available at your local Napa Auto parts store- or even an auto wrecker.

The MAP ( Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor that is critical to most automotive fuel injection systems will typically operate off a 5 volt reference signal, and vary voltage ( or sometimes resistance)with varying Hg. There are so may different types- I recommend that you have a Napa Auto parts catalog opened to the page that lists them all- with pictures. Although rather large compared to your 0.1" spec., internally, the actual sensing device probably matches your need. Dissection will reveal the actual sensor that you can re-wire as needed. Check into alldatadiy.com to get the specifications for whatever make model car you chose. Good luck, ODD Parts Fabrication

I need the sensor only.

I has to fit inside a pipe that is .5" ID but there are some wires and small tubing to also fit in that space.

I found global spec good for sorting all the pressure ranges and types but not for size.

I wound up manually searching lots of sensors but nothing small enough.

Kulite has something small enough but cost $800

Freescale has some that will be a really tight fit. May not work, but only cost $10...Newark has them in stock and you can get samples (2 max) for some of their models.

Is it possible for you to mount the sensor elsewhere and then run tubing between the two points?

On all my projects I give consideration to the accessibility of transmitters for the purpose of maintenance and calibration. Often the test/sample point is in a location that is awkward or potentially dangerous for a worker so when possible I move the transmitter to a more convenient location. Typically I connect the transmitter to the process with SS tubing but depending on the chemicals involved I may use PVDF or Teflon tubing as needed.

Try giving Omega a call or try this link. They have a fairly large inventory and may have what you need. While there get copies of there catologs sent to you, they contain a lot of fantastic reference material and they give it to you for FREE.

My thought was that the sensor should be as close to the source of the pressure as possible. How would running 20 feet of 1/8" tubing affect response?

I will not have much time for this measurement. Only about 8 seconds. Then I have to come out. So the response time has to be the quickest possible.

I will be measuring the hydrostatic pressing in a liquid with a 20 ft probe while flowing some argon gas.

Not to be rude or mean but your statement is completely wrong. I have ordered small quantities from several of the companies that can be found using the search parameters of this thread.

Thank you for your comment. I cannot retract a controversial statement that was otherwise not pertinent to his search, However, he did mention one company that required that he must purchase a minimum of two.

Research is often expensive. The dollars involved, the long term profit and the budget, all are specific to the individual, and or companies involved. I work in Niche industries, where one-off is the rule. Sometimes the minimum quantities that I must purchase kill the overall profit of the project. I am pleased to know that your experience is otherwise. I hope to find similar suppliers and often do. My aim in the statement was to suggest that we don't always have to reinvent the wheel. He is likely driving a vehicle that embodies the component he is looking for. Notice how quickly he wrote off the idea, as the component is too large. Not everyone takes apart components like I do to find key elements- that may still solve his investigation.
