Problem with Odometer on Mazda 6 Model 2005

01/16/2012 3:07 PM

My Mazda 6 model 2005 has a problem with the odometer. It is recording more miles than a trip. I didn't' change anything like tires, etc. It is as it comes from the factory.

Could some one help me with this matter?

Yes, your local mechanic or dealer will be able to help you.

Call them.

Maybe it's stuck on kilometers instead of miles...or it could just be defective

You need to visit the Mazda dealer, they will need the S/N. With this they may be able to tell you what size tires, etc the car was designed for. OR did this just start suddenly? Either way get to your local dealer, in the end it will be money well spent.

I think what the OP is saying is that there is a disparity between the trip counter and the odometer...

Can you give us an idea of scale? It it 50% off or 3% off?

For instance is it 5% out as compared to a GPS or map or something or is it as someone has suggested your Trip vs ODO readings?

Up to 3% inaccuracy from the factory is pretty normal.

The odometer is recording like 28% more than the trip in a short time period.

I detect the problem on 72500 miles

The nearest dealer is in Tijuana and it is far away for me. (I live in Mexicali)

I take the car to a mechanic shop, but they only wanted to reset the trip. that does not solve the problem.

Back in the mid 70s I had a Mazda that would warn of imminent speedo cable failure by pegging the speedo needle at max speed (without actually doing that)and ticked the odometer numbers around like poker machine drum reels. It made a distinct whirring sound.

The cable would break completely very quickly once it showed like that and I'm not sure whether there was a ramp up of the symptom that I didn't notice prior to this last gasp display. No GPS back then.

This happened 3 times over a few years with the same symptoms each time.

Does your speed also read higher than actual or is it just the odo?

Have you tried hitting it?
