2000 Chevy Cavalier Z24

01/16/2012 1:33 PM

I have a 2000 chevy Cavalier I have replaced battery and alternator a month ago today I got in my vehicle and started to work about half way there my battery light and abs light came on but car drove fine a few minutes later all my gauges were lighting up and turning off and on then I noticed the car would not switch gears so it feels like it stayed in first gear all the way to work. When I got to work I turned the car off and tried to start all I got when I turned the key was the check engine light I have not tried to jump it yet I will on my lunch what I did do is check fuses and remove and then re insert cluster fuse which did not fix the problem any help would be appreciated thanks

You can begin by typing "cavalier" into the "Search all of CR4" box to the right of the screen just above the CR4 Sections column.

There'll be a bazillion topics there for you to search.

Good Luck.

Sounds like a loose or corroded connection on the battery or starter or ground or alternator or fuse box, or possibly a short....Have you considered a new car?

See if you can borrow an ODBII reader.

A couple auto parts stores will pull your codes (if any) for free.

If you check engine light is not on there might NOT be any codes.

Just mt 2 pennies worth!

Good advice from Lyn and SolarEagle.

Why did you have to replace both the battery and the alternator? You need to check the alternator's out-put to start with, if you have the tools to do it yourself. The alternator should put-out a minimum of 13.2 volts and approx. no more than 14.8 volts. less than 13.2 volts won't charge the battery and more than 15 volts will damage the battery. And, as other's have said, check for loose connections, particularly battery cable connections, also fusible links that are opened.

I am beginning to think that CR4 stands for Cavalier Repair version 4.0.

As Lyn said, search the archives, go put a pot of coffee, or two, on, and then start sifting through the gigabytes of information regarding the Cavalier, just on this site.

We should start a pool for the next "I have a problem with my Cavalier", and see who can predict it down to the next, closest inquiry date and time.

I sympathize with you dear sir, but you are chasing a gremlin in ever trying to get this machine to behave to the norm of even a Yugo...and that's a stretch.

What about a separate CR4 section for Chevy Cavaliers?

your problem can be solved with only a minor adjustment

you need to adjust the nut behind the wheel...

CR$ the place where old cavaliers go to die

Hello. The symptoms you describe do seem to indicate low voltage in the electrical system. Is the alternator drive belt still in place and adequately tensioned ? Are the electrical connections at the battery and altenator clean and tight ?You can try some basic diagnostics:turn the headlamps on , are they as bright as you would normally expect them to be,no-have the battery charged and tested,yes-leave the lights on and try to start the car ,do the headlamps stay bright or go out,if they go out you are probably working with a bad connection near the battery electrically speaking,if they stay bright and the starter motor does not turn over you are probably working with a bad/poor connection in the starter/ignition circuits.Assuming you have the battery charged and it tests ok start the vehicle and have the altenator tested for output voltage/current.I would not be concerned with the OBD ( On Board Diagnostics)(not odb) untill the basics are checked since the computerized management systems will not function properly being supplied low voltage.Hope this helps.
