Circuit Breaker Close And Open Coil Resistance Measurement

01/18/2012 3:42 PM

What do I have to use to measure the open and close coil resistance of the HV/MV circuit breaker control coils. Does regular ohm-meter do the accurate measurement (I mean because of the coil inductance?) or I have to use a ductor (micro-ohm) tester?

Thank you

What does your Instructor recommend? If you don't know, then your in over your head and shouldn't be troubleshooting the CB's. It could lead to disastrous results

Modern CBs use μP based coils - be it Shunt Trip, Closing or UV coil. If your coils are of this type, you can't usually access the coil to measure its resistance.

Why do you need to measure it anyway?

An Ohm-meter measures only the resistance because it does its measurement with a DC source inside the meter. So, it cannot mesaure any reactance. Whatever you read from an Ohm-meter is resistance only.

Typically, manufacturer's data on HV & MV breaker trip and close coils give a DC resistance value. You don't need to worry about the inductance. Most often they are DC powered in operation (not always, though!). Anyway, you should be able to meaure them with a DMM, because the value is usually give to tenths of ohms. Minor differences of 1 or 2 tenths of an ohm are not uncommon.
