Strange sounding terminology. Google didn't find anything. If I had to guess, I would think you are making a reference to the flat panel upon which a control circuit is mounted. This panel is fastened to the inside of the control panel (or box) so that a door can be closed to protect it from external threats.

Or perhaps it refers to the back side of the "box" which has no penetrations sticking out of it. It seems like a word or two are missing from the term.

I have on occasion heard the terms "dead back" and "open back".

Dead back - can be mounted against a wall, no back access to panel interior.

Open or Live back - to be mounted away from a wall with back access to panel components.

Now be a good lad, open your books, study and finish your homework yourself.

Never heard that term before, but the term "dead front" is quite common. It means when you open the outer door of an electrical enclosure, there is another inner door that holds all the operators, user interface devices and such, but there is no exposure to any live parts unless you then open that inner door. "Dead back" might mean something similar, especially if an enclosure has rear access. When you open the rear door, you still are not exposed to live conductors.

I think Jraef has it. Dead front is primarily used in situations where the "operator" is not allowed access to functions intended for access by the "programmer". It is a UL requirement for many control panels here in the US.

A dead back control panel is one which has a door or bolted cover which completely encloses the live terminals. Dead back is the standard design used in areas where personnel other than qualified electrical personnel may enter.

In contrast, a live back control panel has no rear cover at all, and live, unprotected terminals are easily accessible. Live back panels are typically used in electric substations where the only people in the station are aware of the hazards.
