Strange Computer Noises Heard Over a Modified FM Radio

01/22/2012 1:45 PM

I got an FM radio from a charity shop for £1. I spread out one of the copper coils on the board to expand the frequency range. I was able to hear aircraft communicating. Also on one of the frequencies a strange buzzing computer sounding noise can be heard at times very clearly. I think it is some sort of data communication. Is there any way to record it to a wav audio file and decode it with software?

I have got the signals recorded into my computer but I am needing software to decode them. What software would open the audio file and output the signal as text?

I have tried that and it seems to be an ancient program that uses serial ports. It doesn't work.

That sounded like the audio signature of a telemetry signal to me. (more examples)

Was that hiss, at the beginning, part of what you recorded or an artifact of your recording? A longer recording would have been nice.

You won't be able to extract the data without hardware. Depending on what this is a signature of, you might even be able to use a telephone modem to demodulate the data and read it using Hyperterminal via your PC's serial port (RS232 UART).

Are you dead against using the serial port of your computer? If so we'll stop here.

My brother lived very close to a radio broadcast tower. You could hear the radio station on his electric coffee pot.

And his stereo speakers.

I remember when trucker's amped CB's would bleed through the church PA system. That usually woke everybody up!

I agree with redfred, pretty funny!

Good enough for a GA from me.

Sorry about that Yahlasit! The words "Public address" are rarely spoken when referring to this system of microphones, amplifiers, and speakers. It is so common to say "P. A.", that I typed it, forgetting to consider, CR4 is world-wide, the global economy depends on effective communications, and language barriers.

Perhaps a concise writing style such as APA, MLA, or URM would be OK? I will try not to make ambiguous statements like, "MSU is currently the only undefeated men's NCAA BB team in the USA according to ESPN!" Since that statement could be confusing, for brevity and clarity I'll just say "Go Racers!"

Here is a small wav file of what I captured from my radio. Is there any software that can decode and display the signal?

Heard it and analyzed it's spectrum on Audacity and I'm pretty sure it's no sort of valid data. It's a dialer worm beating an unhooked modem. If it's integrated hardware, disable it from BIOS. S.M.

You've detuned one of the filter inductors to some unknown value and now you hear strange sounds. What you don't realize is that your wav file is an audio bandwidth limited sampling of an unknown modulated signal that is probably at least a Quadrature Phase Shift Keyed (QPSK) modulation that has already gone through frequency demodulation....

Who am I kidding here. Even if I could get a clean RF spectrum analysis of the raw signal to analyze, I doubt you'd grasp my answer.

Aren´t we contributing to build an atomic bomb in someones backyard? Did we consider this "some sort of data communication" may be private and or confidential? ´dont want to look paranoid, but it could be of help if the OP explains WHY he wants to decode this info.

Radio hams have a non voice communication for radio waves that sounds a bit strange, I forget what its called, but its similar to fax machines if I remember correctly.....Possibly its that....

You are talking about Packet radio, sounds very much like an old modem. I didn't listen to the recording so I can't say if that is it. They do have software to decode packet radio with a sound card if that is what it is.

No problem,

I still have a couple of PK-88's sitting in a box somewhere. I did used them on 2 meters way back, but sometimes with a scanner and them set in a mode to view anything coming in, you would find signals that could be decoded but nothing interesting. Most of the random signals like the poster is asking about are proprietary and could not be decoded with the box I had.

I also recall listening to RTTY on my dad's HF rig although he never had a box for decoding that, but its easy to recognise the sound.

One of the aircraft bands is adjacent to the FM band. Since you are picking up aircraft communications, then the signal is probably a VOR. These are used to determine aircraft location much like GPS but an oder technology.
