Which eCommerce Solution

01/27/2012 6:04 PM

I need to set up a website to sell upto 200 items.

I need good SEO, SMO etc but good ecommerce functionality is equally important.

There is a confusing list of ecommerce web packages advertised.

Can anyone tell me what crucial things I should look for.

Any particular, optimal platform(s) or technologies I should ask for?

I also need a system that prints out labels with the clients details and item details that I can stick on a jiffy bag, place the goods into and put in th epost bag.

Is there standard (or common) software module that can do this or will the programmers have to design this from scratch.

As always, any/all help appreciated.

Have you done any research yet?

Looked at any systems?

Contacted any vendors?

Sorry everyone, posted this question last night, couldn't see it on system this afternoon so posted it again!

I have been advised Wordpress or Joomla as the platform for the website design, no names for the ecommerce section have been mentioned.

Can you suggest any I should explore?

There are a bunch of "canned" e-commerce sites available that would work perfectly for you. Wordpress is more geared toward blog sites, and Joomla is probably overkill, but something like PHPCart or ZenCart would be ideal. I personally like ZenCart. It has a large user base and help community, and there are a zillion cosmetic themes, functional mods, and add-ons available. It also comes as a "one-click install" with a lot of web hosting plans like Dreamhost which saves you some work setting up the MySQL databases. With a secure SSL certificate, you can do secure processing through your site with a merchant account, or install payment modules for Paypal, Google Checkout, AlertPay, etc, etc.

You can also make your own "EZ Pages" and stick custom html in them, so you have some options as far as layout is concerned.

You'll also want to download and install a few of the SEO tools modules.

Good luck,
