What is the water used for? The nature of the treatment depends on its end use.

The most common method is to inject chlorine.

The elimination of undesirable micro organisms in a water tank if desired,it is necessary to make empty that tank first.then thorough cleaning and complete scraping should be carried out so that the colonies developed by m.o. must be waved off.The whole tank then must be filled with 1-2% solution of Hcl for atleast 4-6 hrs.The tanks walls and bottom should be coated with lime solution Ca(OH )2,must be dried out completely before taking in line.

Actually a common problem with coolant tanks in machine shops.

The tanks will begin to smell after about a week

We use 1/2 box of baking soda in the tank each time it is refreshed.

Odor problems are gone. Tank life nearly doubled. Cheap and effective.

Chlorine, baking soda (sodium Bicarbonate) and many other chemicals are good options for preventing and removing bio growth from water tanks and piping. What we really need to know in order to give the best advice is "what is the application?". Is the water used for drinking? Is it used for cooling a Nuclear reactor? Then what are the materials of construction, HCL and other chemicals don't always play well with certain materials.

In general non specific applications a 3ppm to 6ppm concentration of chlorine should meet your most of your needs at a very low cost.

Use a 254 nm UV lamp. It will disinfect your tank.
