Connection Between DSL Modem and Switch

02/03/2012 6:36 AM

I want to setup a wireless LAN through WIFI . The WIFI device will further connect to a switch. the switch will further connect to a DSL modem. The PCs will then connect to the internet through this WIFI to switch to MODEM configuration. Now I want to know what should be the type of connection between each device i.e. will we use straight or cross over connection to connect the DSL modem to the switch. Will we use straight or crossover connection between the switch and WIFI access point?

What is the purpose of the switch if the computer is using wifi? A standard Enet cable between the modem and the wifi router is fine. Crossover cables are for like devices and "older" equipment (from the 90's).

You could just buy a wireless gateway DSL router and be done with it.

I think you really need to use a wireless "router" which usually also has 4-5 wired ports. If you want more than 5 wired ports, you can add a network switch. The easiest way to set up this network is sketched below.

I use this configuration myself because I need more than 4 wired ports. All wired Ethernet connections used CAT5 or CAT6 standard (NOT crossover) cables. DON'T be tempted to use a "hub" instead of a "switch" if you set up a network like this one.

Ditch the switch. (unless you need more wired access)

No need for x-over cables. The equipment is all auto sensing these days.
