Closing Time of Quick Closing Valve

02/04/2012 9:45 AM

We're building a ship. We purchased a quick closing globe valve for oil system & hydraulic impulse unit for it (level handle type). Problem is: if I want to close the valve, I have to pull down the level handle 3 times. The ship's owner don't accept that.

Who have rules or standard requirement for closing time of quick closing valve, thanks.

Here's the most important rule:

The ship's owner is paying for the ship. Don't argue with him, give him the valve he wants, instead of trying to convince him that your underperforming valve will be, "good enough".

And if the power goes out?

You need two things. 1. A longer fulcrum point and 2. a longer piston. The longer the throw of the piston the more pressure you will build. You might want to consult with a hydraulic engineer at to the exact specifications of the piston size and length to build the pressures needed to close the valve.

I googled the thread title and indications are that an answer could be found.

Some advice...

Provide THE valve that complies with the ship's specifications for it.

If the customer wants a valve that exceeds this then give it to them, charge them and enjoy the variation windfall.

That you are looking for rules and standards means that it either wasn't specified at the time of quotation and you are trying to do the right thing or you are looking for a way to finish this job as cheaply as possible. Which is it?

Check with the client if adding an accumulator to the system will meet the specification. Keep the accumulator charged at all times. In the event of a quick shut off required, discharge the accumulator into the valve closing cylinder. Use the handle and a non return valve to charge the accumulator, open the valve, and close the valve in non-emergency situations.
