How Do You Rectify An Open Transmission Cable Buried in the Ground?

02/09/2012 12:10 AM

Hi. I was in a job interview once and the interviewer asked me this question (stated above). He also asked how I will find the open cable. Can anyone please help me on this question? Thank you very much.

Hi ron

This is done by using pod , u need to plug into your ears and move then instrument over the line, if there is any leakage then u get the beeps.

Fixing this can be done "cable joint kit", slightly expensive and ranges according to Sqmm of the Cable .

Thanks

frank

Hi. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I remember during my interview, the engineering head told me to assume that the transmission line is miles in distance and you dont have a reference or plan which will show where the cable is laid. What do you think is the solution to this scenario-finding where the open cable is. Is it necessary to replace the whole transmission lines?

Your failure to adequately describe the problem at hand, to us, may be an indication of the reason for your failure to get the job.

What else have you not mentioned?

Go through installation as-built drawings and if they have made any cable joints first check them.

There is a devise called "TELEFLEX", in case of any damage or open area to your cable, you will get an access to the conductor, in which you will sent a signal through the cable conductor using the 'TELEFLEX" and any change in the signal wave will appear on the screen. Also, it will show you the exact location of the fault.

TELEFLEX_M

N.b: You have to refer to the "As-built drawings" to get the route of your cable.

If I had a very long underground cable and had to locate an "open" circuit, I'd start by using TDR or "Time Domain Reflectometry" to locate the DISTANCE to the break. A short RF pulse is sent down the line and reflects off of the open circuit break. The velocity and time of travel of the pulse can provide a surprisingly accurate result when the right equipment (see post #6) is used. Once you know the distance, you should be able to find the precise location of the break using a HF/RF signal source and a tuned receiver (sniffer).

Repair techniques would depend on many factors not provided in your example.
