Cummins Generator - Problems With Oil Cooler or Seals

02/09/2012 11:01 PM

Dear All,
I have cummins generator 500KVA-QSX15g8. running hours 2600, for 2 years old.
a repetitive problem occure with the oil cooler or the seals every 4 months.
oil mixing with the coolant.
Does anyone know why this problem occure frequently with these kind of engine QSX?
I have a friend who have the same generator and suffer from the same problem

Thank you in advance
JMI

While this is not my speciality, I have some questions.

Is that a single seal, or a double seal.

Is there always a positive pressure in the oiling at or above the coolant loop.

Is there a finely polished surface on the shaft, that will not abrade the seals lips.

Violating the rules, you may get a system with the wrong pressure relationship, where the coolant slowly leaking past the seal etches the shaft enough to wear anything down touching that shaft.

Start here, and work your way down logically.

IF such a potential exist, Cummins better be aware of it.

This is a "new" machine.

Every 4 months!!!!???

What did Cummins say the first time? Were the seals correctly fitted? Orientation etc.

If you have the manual can you post the page that shows the location of the seals that you believe to be the culprit?

Is this a Chinese or US Cummins?

It seems you aren't the first to encounter this.....

Contact the poster of this earlier CR4 thread to find out what he ended up doing.

Hello. Check this manual , if for no other reason then to rethink through the basics. http://www.cumminspower.com/www/literature/applicationmanuals/t-030_p93-115.pdf I am considering that the expansion / contraction rates of the parts involved in the cooling system may be exceeding design for this relatively new Cummins. There is a remote chance also that a hairline crack / fracture which opens only under high heat loads could cause this problem. Hope this helps.

That's a pretty bad worst case.

New machines from a reputable manufacturer.....

Is there a tech bulletin or recall notice out on that design flaw?

OP should have lunch with his local Cummins agent to sort this out.

Hello Wal. That's a pretty bad worst case. Yes. New machines from a reputable manufacturer..... Not so new, considering the international warranty expires at 2000 hours.OP stated 2600 hours,my interpretation that Cummins no longer recognizes this as a new engine. Is there a tech bulletin or recall notice out on that design flaw? Not that i am aware of.Could be the start of one though.OP states that, " I have a friend who have the same generator and suffer from the same problem ". Apparently not an isolated incident. Recalls and tech bulletins often do not start with the manufacturer rather with independent repair firms making the repairs.See links of another line of cummins engines. ( http://www.locknstitch.com/5.9_cummins_cracked_block.htm ) ( http://www.cumminsdieselspecs.com/cummins-53-block.html ) ( http://stamey.info/Truck/Cummins53BlockFAQ.htm ) OP should have lunch with his local Cummins agent to sort this out. Yes.OP states " a repetitive problem occure with the oil cooler or the seals every 4 months." 2 Years = Seals replaced 6 times. 2600 hours / 2 years, warranty probably expired around 18 months - seals probably replaced under warranty 6 times. Yes Cummins should be buying the lunch.

You said it all...........its a Cummins.

All jokes aside was the Cummins engines that you and your friend purchased manufactured in the USA or China.........if the latter...........say no more!!!!

An acquaintance of mine who owns a large fishing company, buys the Chinese Cummins by the container load.........as soon as he has a problem, he takes the "old" engine out, sends it out for scrap and replaces it with a new one............workss out a lot cheaper in the long run.
