Google "clamp meter", preferably having turned off CAPS LOCK first.

I really dont understand your question. Are you asking a question as "how is the clamp meter of the tong tester works as compare with the CT's"?

Basically, the clamp meter or sometime we call the Tong meter works by the electromagnetic principle. As you know that the electric cable, either copper or aluminium, that curry electric current will produce electromagnetic flux along the cables.

By using the clamp meter, the clamping tong (Jaws) which is made of laminated steel plates will cut the electromagnetic flux and convert the EMF into voltage. By some resistor, transistor and other electronic devices, that build inside the clamp meter, it convert the voltage and energize the moving coil where it deflected the needle according to the strength of the voltage or in this case, is the current inside the copper cables.
