Magnets for a Magnetic Chips Conveyor

02/14/2012 7:27 AM

Hello, I need to manufacture a new magnetic conveyor which is to be used to carry the scrap generated during press operation from under the machine. We have a similar conveyor operating with one machine (photographs of the conveyor are attached), at present, the width of present conveyor is 300 mm. One more machine is being installed in line with the old machine within the next few days, and we wish to provide a common conveyor for both the machines (one conceptual drawing I have prepared, which is also attached with this mail). The estimated scrap generation by both the machine together will be around 30-32 kg per minute which needs to be conveyed continuously.

Chips material: (C.R coil), Chips generation (15+ 15) i e approx 30 to32 kg per min.

Chips are mixed with Monex oil (Stamping oil).

If you see the G A Drg. attached, I have kept the conveyor width 600 mm at present. I do not have much knowledge of magnets, so if anybody, based on the drawings and photographs, suggest what kind of magnets and of what power shall I need to manufacture a conveyor similar to the old one, and how many magnets I will have to use to convey the scrap generated, alternately is there some better solution? Please suggest the magnet type that should be used along with the number of magnets required with specifications- size, power etc.

Thanks and sincere regards,

Rajendra Kumar Gajre

Are you planning on building the new conveyor in house? Wouldn't the original manufacturer have the specs used for repair? Check the part numbers on the conveyor and see if you can get the specs for the magnets. Looks like a good design.

An option would be to use steel bars under the conveyor belt with coils built into either side wall, on the top of the conveyor only, to create a magnet as you need. You could make it a variable voltage so that you could change the strength of the magnet as needed for different materials. As the bars engage the coils in the side walls they become temporary magnets but when they pass the head pulley and exit the coils they lose magnetism. of course you would need to engineer this properly as not to magnetize the entire conveyor. You would need to isolate the bars from the chain drive and the coils from the walls. Remember, this is only a concept. Have a local or in house engineer develop it for you.

Your other option would be to either have a conveyor manufacturer come in and take care of the whole thing or reverse engineer the original.

I would like to see your solution when it comes about! Good luck!

Help

Thanks, yes i am planning to build the conveyor in house and no..there are no specification visible on the face of magnets and to see on the under side I will have to break one of the magnetic row since the magnets are fixed with some kind of super glue.

You called me in the morning and I was in the midst of traffic. Just by seeing you cannot make out what is the material of the magnet. Alnico or Ferrite / ceramic or strontium magnets all look the same. But strountium magnets are powerfula nd tehre is a technical spec for it. Neodymium is extremely powerful and expensive. You can find out relative merits of these from Wikipedia.

First plese decide what you are looking for - jsut magnets or total solution. On CR4 you may get a bit confused as you will definitely get multiple alternative solutions- but ultimately you are the best judge.

Take a look at these conveyors by WardCraft. We do a lot of metal stamping and the type of conveyors we use are "ribbed" steel hinged belts.

thanks for the help. But won't the scrap slide down on the inclination on a ribbed belt, or do you mean a Flighted belt??

Thanks for the effort you put into presenting your inquiry Raj!!!!

Are you not concerned that having a common conveyor will introduce a single point of failure for two machines?

If the conveyor gets log jammed or stops you loose 100% utility from your punching station.

I would operate with 2x300 instead of 1x600. Better still 1x300 + 1x600 to have a hot spare that can do double duty in the event of a failure of the smaller conveyor. 2x600 would be ideal. Risk assessment needed.

Can you post some photos of the existing conveyor magnets please?

As asked previously, will you and your team be building this yourselves?

Here's an interim backup conveyor solution....

I would not use magnets. I would use a standard conveyer belt with 3 inch ribs. At the end of the ribbed belt a steep slide that narrows at the bottom to a funnel shape, and dump the scrap into stationary buckets hooked up like a Ferris wheel. With the amount of weight you are dumping you would be able to create enough momentum to use a gearing system and run a generator with the power provided by the dumped waste. You might just as well use the waste for something other than paper weights.

Good luck with your project.

Problems often present opportunities to create something unique.

There are multiple manufacturers who standardize on the magnetic conveyor you are looking for.

("Likewise", excellent post...) Though we use both permanent and electro-magnets a lot for inspection purposes, my experience with respect to specifying same is zero.

But, as already mentioned, there are numerous companies which have already done all the leg-work, perfecting conveyors for various applications.

One from *my* hometown is ERIEZ. Lots of variations-on-the-theme are available, as the various site-links will show (with world-wide availability).

Wishing "Best of Luck" in your endeavor ~
