The safest way is to find out where the generation plant is. To mess with high tension lines which could carry voltages beyond 50,000 volts will kill, anyone who does not have the correct equipment and the knowledge to use them.

That being said, measuring the AC voltage between different polls will give the direction. Assuming there is enough of a load to pull one side down.

Attach an 8 foot fluorescent tube to a non-conductive pole of appropriate length.

Hold the pole over your head in close proximity to the HT line using one hand.

Note which end of the tube lights first. This will be the direction that the current is coming from.

Of course you must be holding a henway in the other hand for this to work accurately.

Now seriously, to answer your question, review the "one-line" drawing/schematic for the area of grid you are working to find the power source(s).

Given your question, do not climb any power poles, do not climb any transmission towers.

Stay away from HT lines or for that matter, any electric lines altogether.

Come in contact with an energized HT line and you most likely will NOT get a second chance to do it again.

I think you mean 'phase sequence' (checking which phase is which on a three phase system where the phases are not clearly marked).
