If Neutral Broken in Single Phase Consumers Distribution

02/15/2012 6:34 AM

If the 3 Phase TT distribution radial system is connected to number of single phase consumers where P-N is 240V & P-P is 415V. Please assume that there are 2 of single phase consumers call Consumer-A & Consumer-B for easy explanation. Assume that consumer-A is tapped to R phase & Neutral; consumer B is tapped with Y phase & Neutral. As you all aware in consumers A & B supplied with 240V AC (P-N). Now think that Neutral conductor has been broken apart from Consumer A & B (The broken conductor is not between consumer A & B)

Now my problem is what will happen to in this circuit when both consumers powered equipments?

Note: I think that when both consumers (A&B) powered an electrical equipment, closed loop will become with 415V Phase to Phase supply (R-Y). and it will be a serious problem. What do you all thinking here?

Contact the supply company to have the neutral link reinstated as a matter of urgency on safety grounds. In the meantime, disconnect both users from the supply and do not re-energise until the neutral link has been reinstated by the supply company.

I want to know that whether I am correct or not where P-N is 415V or 240 when Neutral has broken???

Al Nashadh,

You are right. The Phase-to-Neutral voltage can go as high as 415V (in place of 240V). The actual magnitude is decided by relative impedances of loads connected to each of the phases.

I thinking "why are you wasting time asking questions on here?" Get the supply company involved before someone is killed!

I had experienced a neutral missing in single phase consumer. When I checked with a neon tester, it was indicating but because of no neutral availability , circuit was not complete and equipments were not working.

But when I missed the neutral in 3 phase supply consumer. I got 415V instead of 230V and lost many lamps which was switched on during that time.

If you are not an electrician just switch off power to these consumers and call an electrician investigate what happened to the neutral link IMMEDIATELY TRUE VOLTAGE WILL RISE TO 415 Vt depending on the impedances of connected load.PLEASE!!!!!!!!
