Need Formula, Miles per Hour/Gear Reduce Ratio

02/15/2012 2:11 PM

I have a few conveyor calculation formulas but I need to determine the gearbox ratio to use on a simple project and I am at a loss. I need to drive a shuttle car at 10 m.p.h., I have a 1750rpm motor and a 12" dia. wheel driven directly off of a gear reducer. Anybody have a formula for me to use?

Well first I would convert the mph to fpm, 5280ft * 10mph / 60min....Now you know the rpm is 1750 so you must determine the circumference of the 12" gear or pi * diameter, this will give you fpm of 12" gear at 1750 rpm...Now with simple arithmetic you can determine the difference....

Thanks alot, I calculated a 6:1 gear reducer should get me to there.

Does 75 : 1 Gear ratio compute?

Think you might need more gearing.

Must first convert inches to feet.

Oh yea, 37.7 ft per rev. IS quite a lot. Yep ratio is 6.25

Well, I know that 60mph =88ft.second.

10mph = (88 feet/second/6)x60seconds = 880 feet/minute

880/π = 280.076 revolutions/minute.

1750/280.076 = 6.25 reduction.

I think.

Surely, when you were qualifying for credentials that qualified you to be employed in a position requiring you to perform this calculation, you were examined and found to be competent at simple geometric modeling of physical problems......

You managed to work it out after a prompt, but....

Isn't there anyone working with you that can peer review your calculations?

Obviously if we all had the superior intelligence of Wal this forum would be redundant. I thank the rest of you who took the time to assist a mouth breathing neanderthal with grade school arithmetic sans snarky comments.
