Question on How to Calculate Depth of Thread for UNF

I am taking a class at a local community college, The instructors work book only has sections of another book. I have to figure out how to find a depth of thread for a UNF 1/2-20 Screw. I would like to know what the formula is to figure this out

If you want a "formula" then further to the diagrams offerd by JohnDG:

p (pitch) is, obviously 1/tpi

hn = 0.54127p - basic height of internal thread & depth of thread engagement - Metric threads are the same.

hs = 0.6495p - basic height of external thread. - Metric threads 0.61344p

Who makes this stuff up?

Assuming the college, or town, has a library, check out a copy of "Machinery's Handbook".

Assuming you are really serious.

You might even find one on-line or in a book store. Wait, I'm not sure there are book stores.
