Viscocity Meter for Jacketed Vessel

02/21/2012 1:24 AM

I have a jacketed vessel which will be installed with a viscocity meter extended into the jacketed vessel. now the problem rises, there is an agitator right at middle, between the wall of jacketed vessel and the agitator is only 2mm. this gives the problem of installing the meter sideways at the vessel body . However, the bottom vessel is the parabolic shape, this area has no affect of agitator. Can the meter installed at the bottom of the vessel. any other customised meter recommended?

in general, the viscometer can be mounted in any orientation whatsoever brand and type! can i conclude that?

Westdeap,

when your agitator is running, you will have different viscosity measurements across the vessel because of the different shear forces in the different parts of the vessel. You may have to try different orientations to decide which location is the best representative of the viscoity measurement that you need.

Consider putting two stabbings into the vessel, one near top, one near bottom. Install a pipe loop from bottom to top via a small pump and the viscosity meter. This will give a more representative result because you are continuously changing the fluid tested rather than testing what might be a dead spot within the mixer. Also this solution is much easier to maintain, clean, ect. and gives you the opportunity to tap off samples.

Few Questions before arriving at the solution :

- What is the fluid in the vessel ?

- Is it a Batch Process or a continuous process ?

- Is the viscosity measurement required continuously ?

Thanks
