DC Power Supply

What is the main difference between regulated power supply and switch mode power supply ?

I have some problem with passive infra red sensor (input 12v DC). some one told me that i should use switch mode power supply instead of regulated power supply.

It's unlikely to be the power supply, Captain, unless everything else that hangs on that supply is affected too.

As to the differences between types of power supplies, well, let's just say that internet search engines are wonderful things, eh?

A properly designed PIR sensor should not care if the regulated power supply is a switch-mode or linear design. HOWEVER, excess heat can cause problems with infrared sensors. Switch-mode power supplies are usually more efficient (dissipate less heat) than equivalent linear supplies.

It's not regulated vs switch mode, a switch mode power supply is usually regulated. It's switch mode vs linear or regulated vs non-regulated. If you have a non-regulated linear power supply, that can effect the output of a sensor because it will fluctuate with incoming line fluctuations. A regulated power supply provides a steady state output regardless of input fluctuations within it's stated tolerance.
