Today (the 22nd) Google Celebrates Hertz

02/22/2012 8:52 AM

Today, Feb. 22nd, Google uses its doodle to celebrate the work of Heinrich Rudolf Hertz, the physicist who did so much work on the electromagnetic theory of light.

Bet you didn't see that coming, did you?

You think they could have taken the trouble to draw a proper sine wave not a bunch of semicircles tacked together.

Yeah, good point.

Software engineers; probably got C's in Physics.

Har!! As per this thread, us engine-ears don't dare screw with anything that an artist creates!! As posed by many on the thread, we are supposed to genuflect to the artist and tremulously ask if we can dare to ask to correct the waveshape!!

Art and engineering are inextricably linked as many of my threads and posts take pains to show.
You obviously aren't familiar with my stuff.
There is a difference between maintaing and altering, A while back I restored a wooden sculpture. I had a real battle to convince the trustees that what I wanted to do was return it closer to original as there had been previous attampts to make it more rugged.
deciding what to do is a mix of art and engineering whilst trying to do what the artist wants. Of course if the artist can't be contacted it's guesswork.
I don't think there is any conflict or hostility between artists and engineers, quite the reverse.
Accountants and engineers...now that's another matter.

You could have had the decency, as I did , to check for an earlier thread on this topic, especially as you're so late to the party!!!

And he got a gif working!!

Got to agree with Del - it's not a sine wave, however, not all of the shapes are semi-circles, so no GA from me.

I do wonder, though, why yours made the Home page and the first one didn't. It's only 2 below yours on the General page. CR4's not being US-Centric is it?

I could have sworn there was no previous thread about it. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

I give him credit, though, for posting the gif. The screenshot I posted looks lame in comparison.

Nice catch Rose...A mystery though, I have it at 7 posts separation...I usually just click on all threads anyway, you'd be surprised how many posts don't make the front page, and evidently different places have different front pages...cheers!

At the time there was no concept of Sine-wave and Harmonics.

And C/s was not named Hertz.

The poster should have posted from Wikpedia

It is a gif but how to activate it on CR4 posts?

GIFs were deactivated 5 or 6 years ago because they were being over used in posts. One member seemed to have to post at least one gif for every three lines of text. Really annoying and migraine inducing - they usually involved things flashing on and off. It spoilt his informative posts.

Of course the shame is that the occasional useful gif is also deactivated. Well mostly: there are a few that get through!
