Makers Wanted

02/22/2012 3:44 PM

Calling all engineers!

Proper Television is developing a new series about Makers-people with an intense passion for building all manner of contraptions for all manner of purposes. We're currently in the midst of casting characters for the series, and have been reaching out to various groups in an effort to build a Dream Team of Makers.

The series will revolve around a team of Makers who face off against other groups in maker-related competitions. Competitions like:

-Modifying a lawnmower into a 70mph drag racer

-Constructing Rube Goldberg machines

-Building human-powered submarines

-Designing a Machine to hurl pumpkins across football fields

Our goal is to find multifaceted individuals with aptitude in numerous fields pertinent to these sorts of projects. People with experience in things like engineering, electronics, physics, welding, pyrotechnics, construction, engines and industrial design-these are the sorts we're looking to get in touch with.

Is this something that might interest you or your friends? If so, we'd love to hear from you!

Please contact me for further details.

Rube Goldberg machines?

Any time, any size, anywhere. Is it against the rules to have them end in a huge bang?

Can the machine hurling pumpkins be the starting off point?

Don't get me started, Ky.

"Rube Goldberg machines?"

It wouldn't be fair... Microsoft would almost always win.

So, some odd stuff? Odd like "Buying an alligator for $1 because the pet store didn't want one that was two feet long" That's one of the funniest things I have read here at CR4. Love it!

Proper J, maybe have a look at this thread and meet some of the people you are asking. Yeah, there may be some takers here.

For those that may be interested this appears to be a Canadian production (so I guess I'm out due to my location).

What? You're saying they wont travel? Maybe they are not aware that balls run up hill downunder. Have you got an explosives handling license? We could have so much fun, they have no idea .

Just saying the budget may not go that far.

Do overhead transmission line implosive joint kits count?

If not we have a fully stocked kitchen and bathroom and a supermarket right down the road. After all, MacGyver was Canadian, right?

I wasn't aware of that but it explains why it always takes him so long to get out of trouble. And then these damsels in distress who never get the hero. It explains a lot, you are right.

Proper Television is a Canadian production company, but filming will take place all across the US, and participants can be from anywhere in North America!

Count me out Mate and good luck. These shows are about the only thing on TV I can enjoy watching. Ah and 5 second documentaries about Canadian laziness.

I just found a guy who can handle implosive joint kits not to far from here. You have no idea what you are missing out on.

Enjoy, Ky.

"About Makers" would be fine - but the ultimate question should be... "What about actually building the contraptions we contrive?" :))) I don't doubt you've found a sort of gold mine here for people wanting in... But I'm sure many of them have that question in mind :))

Well it wouldn't be much of a show if none of things were actually made, right? We're looking for people who can build just about anything they can imagine!

Proper J, if you are accepting nominations, I would second tcmtech.

As a bonus, he has his own fire truck. Now there is a guy who is thinking ahead!

Too bad this isn't open to international participants.

Technical problems are solved differently in different cultures and every culture has its own variants of redneck and get it done sort of people.

If you gave an American, a Canadian, a Mexican, a Pakistani, A Libyan, a Khmer, a Thai, an Ozzy, a Kiwi and a Brit team the same challenge you would end up with ten totally different solutions.

A lot more scope for surprise solutions with a bigger field and a diversified scavenging yard.

As an avid consumer of these types of programs I find Americans are way too reliant on plywood in their contraptions...gets a bit same-same after a while.

Proper J hasn't said this isn't open to peoples of international birth or heritage. He said the filming is scheduled to take place in the USA.

Diversified salvage yards... yeah, the junk mix is probably a lot different in the various countries around the world, but you have to draw a line somewhere. As I consider, I'll wager the stuff in the junkyards in Maine are different than yards in Arkansas.

It's a TV show that has a budget to live with, let's not get too crazy.

per #8: and participants can be from anywhere in North America!

Why draw a line anywhere? There's more than one way to skin a tiger.

Bigger market bigger budget.

Proper J might be really flash with cash......Hope so!

"...variants of redneck...". That's a good one Wal! We got all kinds of "variants" around my neck of the woods. Come to think of it, I'm looking at my backyard right now and... Nevermind, I've said too much!

Re: Makers Wanted

Proper J,

I would love to participate in the manufacturing and designing end of what ever proposal is put forth.

I have a full machine shop for plastic injection mold design and manufacture which is only utilized intermittently. I had to take full time employment in 2006 to make ends meet and it is a shame to say that it is more of a hobby shop instead of employing 5-6 people. I do not have any aspirations for your TV end but can do some donkey work here.

So count the west coast in--.
