CERN Neutrino Experimental Error - Not FTL After All

02/22/2012 4:37 PM

Looks like a timing error due to a hardware fault is the culprit.

Absolutely not! Yours is based on different technology. But I don't want to spoil the surprise.

Keep the faith. That way you can still qualify as a tax exempt entity.

"A loose connection between a timer and a computer..."

Ahhh, a euphemism for 'We forgot to to plug it in."

D'ohhh!

Like that infamous lab technician at Wright Patterson Air Force Base that kept screwing up? What was his name??? Ah, yes... Murphy!

I resent that slur on Murphy's memory. Murphy was the scientist, the researcher who re-discovered the principle. O'Toole commented that, "Murphy is an optimist."

I first heard of it inthe form, "If there is more than one way to perform an operation, and if one of those ways will end in disaster, someone will do it that way".

I have confirmed that, "toast almost always falls buttered side down" from experience.

Actually, Murphy was a technician at Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

I can only paraphrase the original remark, but an engineer at WPAFB remarked "If anyone can do it wrong, Murphy can!"

Murphy had a reputation for making things go wrong to the point where "Murphy's Laws" resulted as the folk lore we know today.

There is a placard to this effect at the Dayton Air Force Museum if you ever get that way.

Hey, if this is the biggest "OOPS" from CERN, no worries. If something bigger happens, we might not even have time to BLOG about it
