Auto CAD 2012 LT Jerky Cursor

02/25/2012 8:29 AM

I have just downloaded a trail version of ACLT 2012. The the cursor works fine until I start using the Crosshairs for drawing.

I read up and found numerous complaints of this. I really want to go with AutoCAD but this jerky issue would be a deal breaker.

Any fixes or suggestions?

Autodesk has very good on-line help. Ask them. This is not uncommon. AutoCad is a memory hog, too.

Right now i have the Trial version. I have the real thing ordered and will pick up CD next week at the Auto Desk dealer. I found bunches of 'fixes' from AutoDesk and their forums but nothing works yet.

They are way over my head with the graphics cards certifications and drivers, etc.

Any way, I'll see what happens when I get the licensed version . I really like what the 2012 LT has loaded. It has everything i need for my drawing out nets and boat rigging.....and it transforsm into PDF for sending files to customers.

I tried a lot of other programs and they just did not work for me as easy as this......its just this dang cursor jerking like it is in SNAP mode .

Thank you.

Try switching between ortho and polar and see if that helps.

I recall having this problem, but can't remember how I fixed it, and I only have AC at work.

Glad I seen your post by searching google. Ortho and polar switching worked to get rid of my jittery and jerking crosshairs! My system is AutoCad 2012 Windows 7 64 bit. Awesome!

Thank you!

Yes it is.

That's the first step. You have to admit that you have a problem.

Who was it who said, "I don't have a drinking problem. I drink, get drunk, fall down, NO PROBLEM!"

Then there's ""I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning that's as good as they're going to feel all day."

Bottoms up!

It's the curse of the working class I tell ya. Tonight I have to drink again. Roasted oysters don't taste right if they're not washed down with copious amounts of beer.

I would investigate video card upgrade(refresh rate), and max out ram....You might need faster processor....I'm sure there is plenty of experience and solutions on Autocad forum...If you don't want to do this, then maybe an older version of this software will work...You might be able to shut down any other programs you have running while using Autocad, and improve performance...

Ortho mode [F8] or object snaps [F3] might also do something like that.

If you have made the investment to buy the licensed version then that gives you access to their Helpdesk doesn't it?

Or would asking the software developers for advice be an exercise in futility?

The jerky cursor may be an artifact of the trial version.

Wait and see. Don't sweat it. When you have to fix something you will find the way.

As of now, the licensed version is being ordered. It is a very big purchase for us at this time of the year when we buy all of our materials for the upcoming season. It was unexpected but necessary. I do expect that I am not the only one with this problem as the internet was full of persons with the same issue.

I will just await the licensed version and take it from there. I tend to fret too much about things I am not familar with.

We'll wait and see. thank you.

You've got Grid Snap turned on....

Look along the very bottom of the window, under the command window. There are a series of buttons:
SNAP | GRID | ORTHO | POLAR | OSNAP | OTRACK | DUCS | DYN | LWT | MODEL

Press the SNAP button so it is in the up position.

Or just write the command:

snap off

Snap is off.

I read up on the internet last night that others had a problem with a jerky cursor. It seems to be a mix of computer RAM, graphics card , Windows 7, certain mouse devices and Auto CAD not liking some anti-virus programs

I'll just have to wait and see. I may be need to upgrade or definitely have someone smarter than I am look this over.

It seems it is not the software, but rather a mixture of things that are sensitive to one another.

I still remember 35 years ago drawing net designs on graph paper and sending it with a 20 cent stamp to the customer. ha ha!

Over the years I have found and applied these system variable inside acad to "tune up" the working environment.

Go to "Express Tool" and open "System Variables Editor" under "Tools".

Scroll through the variables and make changes to at least the following: (others as you need to customize for your on use.

_DRAWORDERCTL 3

_WHIPTHREAD 3 (instructs acad to use more than one processor )

OPENPARTIAL 0

Outside of Acad in the " control panel" of windoze xp -- look for "system" then open the advance tab, then the "performance settings", then the "advance" in the "performance options" dialog box, tab, then "change" under " virtual memory". Set your "paging file size" to " custom size" I use 4096 on my laptop and a great deal higher on my desktop. you may have to experiment abit to get the best setting. I believe windoze originally only gave 50mb and changing this will give a big boost to acad.

also for windoze xp -- search the acad forums for 3gb boost. There are instructions on how to configure the xp start up file .

these are the changes i can remember. when i get back to the office on Monday, I check my notes where I jot things like this down to see if there is anything else that might help.

Good Luck!!

Try Intellicad. Autodesk will drive you to the poorhouse. Intellicad will do what full Autocad will (not Autocad LT), for about 1/10th the price...! My first Autocad Version was 2.13 (for Tandy 2000- cca 1984). My last was 2004. Intellicad does have some issues, but I can live with them for their price. Happy drafting!

OP is committed to Autocad. Just waiting to rip the gift wrapping off....

Autocad is a defacto "standard" and is the documentation format most frequently specified where cross discipline and inter-enterprise collaboration is involved.

When you are just producing sketches for in-house use or printed format there are loads of easier ways to draw shapes, once you start sharing softcopy then the requirements change.

Anything can be printed as a PDF for visual reference but when the numbers in the drawings are depended on for automated production or controlled multi team design then Autocad is it.

SPOT ON again. OP is old and set in his ways. ha Ha!

When you read up on the "other" versions of CAD they almost always start with................. " just like Auto CAD but less expensive". Hmmmm??? Does that tell us something about who everyone else is chasing?

A 10hp outboard on a 15' Dory and a Turbo-diesel on a 35' skiff will both get you across the Bay.........only which one has a better chance of doing it with less trouble and in less time.......

I am too ignorant about drafting programs and such to argue with masters of these various softwares. I just feel comfortable with AC and for our small busness, it gives us a huge advantage over the larger shops. Money well spent reaps money well earned.

I just checked my notes and it looks like everything I used to eliminate this problem was included in the earlier post.

If that did not help, try changing windoze to the classic environment (no themes) and reducing the acad cursor crosshairs to 95% instead of full screen.

Once again, thank you for such detailed assistance.

I will be picking up the licensed version this week and when loaded, will deal with the problem ( if any).

I have made all changes as you suggested, although the trial version stopped access to one or two of them.

Like you suggested, i will wait and see what happens when I have the real deal on the computer. It might still be just a trial version glitche.

Thank you again.

GH,

Where would I find the % of screen for the cross hairs? I find CURSOR SIZE 1-100, but I can not find the % of screen?

Thank you.

In ACAD select the "Tools" drop down menu, then "options" then "display"

in the middle right hand side of the dialog box there is a slide bar for crosshair size.

Re: Auto CAD 2012 LT Jerky Cursor

Just to let you know, I down loaded the 2012 LT and it ran just fine. It is a slight bit and i mean by 1-2 seconds, slow but for what I need it to do it runs fine. No jerky cursor at all.

I am going to increase the RAM to 4 GB and put in something called a 520(?) graphics card, just on the recommendation of the CAD tech. $300 tops.

Thank you all for the help and ideas. I did learn about memory, storage and hp (RAM) as well as certain tricks to do to improve the use of it.

Thank everyone who invested the time to answer my request.
