How To Calculate Pipe Earth Electrode Length

02/27/2012 1:50 PM

Dear All,

I am from India, IN IS:3043(Guidelines for earthing practice) for pipe electrode sample drawing shown in the book is 100MM dia Cast Iron pipe with 2.5 metre length, but many govt departments (like CPWD, PWD, etc) given there specification 40 or 50 mm dia Galvanished Iron(GI) of length 3 metres and mentioned as per IS 3043, if any one able to give the conversion formula or the relation between them.

Apart from the obvious, being the ratio of dimensions between them, why is this of any significance, Uncle?

Do you know the equation K^2XS^2=I^2xt?. Normally for domestic or shops or small installations fed by LV lines GI pipe is OK but if current is high as in the case of transformer fed connections CI is used. Many people recommend steel cored copper (bonded copper)electrode instead of GI pipes.
