Use of Photocell in Street Lighting

03/05/2012 4:47 AM

Is it possible for me to connect the photocell directly to the lamp without a contactor or a relay. My fittings amperage rating is less than 1A

What is the fault current level, and have you shared this information with the manufacturer of the photocell, Boss? What do they say?

With most cells yes. Just check the switching capacity.

Roughly estimating, with a couple of thousand paralleled photocells, in series with your lamp, you should be OK when it comes to current capacity. The only problem you will face is that the lamp will be ON at daytime and OFF at night. S.M.

Are you using a photocell to power the lamp (photovoltaic), or to control the lamp On/Off (photodiode, for example)? Kind of depends on the type of 'photocell' and what its purpose is. In either event, it's likely you'll need some circuitry for power storage or control.

I want to use it as a switch but what i would also like to know is whether or not it would be good practise to connect the photocell this way.

this wouold be a good idea but i would also recommend u add a physical switch in series to this lamp or circuit , in case of an emergency or faulty photocell in the future
