fiber optics

05/06/2007 2:21 AM

looking for information on fiberoptics design, wanting to know if 1) a simple magnifying (cone shaped) lens is sufficient to be used for viewing a fiberoptic image, doesn't have to be perfect. and 2) is it feasable to splay out the ends of a fiberbundle to get more area coverage (observed)

Thanks

You can use a fiber bundle to carry an image. They use this method in inepscting your large intestine now.(although CCD arrays and LED lights on a rope are changing this, as are the swallowed cameras).

So you have these fibers that make the image. You can increase the space between them to make a larger image, but you will have more black in between them. If you make the fibers thicker you will still have the same light spread over a larger area, and if you make the fiber too large you will also change the angle of total internal reflection as you do this and you may get outscatter losses.

This is a mature science with specialists in it.

drill here.

Can you use a fibre-optic taper? These can be custom made (expensive) or bought off the shelf (slightly less expensive) see http://www.edmundoptics.com/onlinecatalog/displayproduct.cfm?productID=1599#SpecificationTable

The fibres in these are drawn down so that the image is reduced in size but the fibre pattern is maintained so that the image remains true. The taper can be used either way round to increase or decrease the image size.
