Laptop: Compac ARMADA 1560D "HELP"

05/06/2007 8:17 PM

My old laptop is not powering up, though the Power ON indicator shows presents of power, depressing the ON button is not powering laptop.

The AC-DC regulator is working O.K.

Regards

Ron

Try removing the battery and starting up without it. Sometimes the old batteries get so bad they pull the power supply down below the startup threshold voltage.

Second, find out how to reset or erase the non-volatile RAM. On some machines you can do that by removing both the (main)battery and the power supply and holding down the power button for several seconds. then plug it in to the power supply and restart.

Third, remove the RAM and reseat it. if you have more than one RAM chip, try one at a time.

Good luck

Dick

One more thing... Check the hard drive. I've noticed that some laptops that are left too long without running lose their hard drives. Why does this happen? I don't know, but it sometimes does.

Remove all power, mains cable and battery, leave for at least a couple of hours. Then plug in ONLY the mains cable, if it then powers up, shut down and replace battery and try again, but I would then guess that the battery is at least partially defective and the problem is back again.

Laptop (& Video camera rechargeable batteries.)

If you have a laptop, but usually work with the mains lead plugged in you have the following choices with most Laptops:-

1) Accept that the battery will be defective, usually, but not always, within 12 months. Fix, buy a new battery and do the same thing again.

2) Completely remove battery and only charge it when going "on the road". Battery will last for years....

3) Keep an eye on the battery monitor and unplug the mains lead (or put a switch in the mains side) before the battery is full. Set the battery monitor to let you know when it is down to say 15% and then switch on again....battery will last for years.

I personally am not sure which of the options 2 or 3 is really the best, sorry..... 1 is of course the worst, and of course the one that most people actually use!!!!

But LIPO batteries should be stored long term in a "low charge condition" according to Sony. That is the point at which the device (Laptop, video camera etc) turns itself off due to a low battery condition.......

It would be nice to hear from someone with more up to date knowledge than I have...

There it is! I need a relay switch Andy. One connected to my notebooks battery AND controls the AC adapter power going into the notebook.

That WOULD be really slick. Since my dv9000t will only run a couple hours on battery, it would drive me nuts trying to keep plugging in and unplugging the AC adapter. An automatic relay switch doing that would work very nicely. Ever seen anything like that? Someone needs to make them. Would save many batteries!

Great post.

If you could get at the voltage actually on the battery, it would not be too difficult to build something......but I have to admit that I have never built a charger or charger controller for LIPO batteries! Lead acid are my speciality. I have built many chargers for those with very good results!!!!

Hopefully you will find someone else with a better knowledge of LIPO on CR4.....

Till then use options 2 & 3 from my last post!!

It is fairly common for you to see the light on your laptop if the power adapter is putting out power. The problem is that there is a charger circuit board which actually charges the battery just under the touchpad on the right side... if I remember right. When that goes bad, quite often, you get the problems you're experiencing and others. Good luck, it's not fun.

Do a search for a schematic for that model and you'll see the board.
