Capacitive vs Resistive Touch. Why This Difference?

How capacitive and resistive touch screen works? what is the difference?

Also, why is it so that joystick (stylus) can be used with resisitive touch and not with capacitive touch?

I'm guessing a little here, this not being my field.

A resistive screen reacts when its internal resistance (in a location or cell) is changed by the deformation of the screen. There are a number of materials whose resistance changes under stress - see strain gauges. Since only deformation is required, it does matter what does the poking: your finger or a stylus (a joystick is something entirely different) will perform equally well.

A capacitive screen works when the local capacitance is changed. This relies on voltage leakage through the contacting item. You are a reasonable conductor of electricity - and the values of the human body are known - the stylus is likely to be plastic and therefore will not conduct, thus will not promote a change in voltage.

I do hope this isn't a homework question and you're asking here because you don't pay attention in class.

Hi,

A resistive touchscreen panel is composed of many layers, the most important of which are two thin, electrically conductive layers separated by a very thin gap. When finger, presses down on a point on the panel's outer surface the two metallic layers become connected at that point. This causes a change in the electrical current which is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing.

A capacitive touchscreen panel consists of an insulating layer such as glass and coated with a transparent conductor. As the human body is a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the body's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance.This causes a change in the electrical current which is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing.

GA to Rose and CRSR...

I would only add that capacitive does not always require actual touch...mere presence close to the surface of a cd sensor can activate it. You will notice this on most personal electronic devices.

I agree that at times one doesn't even need to touch the sensor and by just being near may trigger the switch. That has something to do with the existing humidity around that particular area..

Another aspect relative to the user is that the capacitive touch allows for a multi-touch effect allowing greater control and more varied input.

The resistive does tend to be more precise but alas, no multi touch. I always hoped for a precision device like a tablet to come out with both controls. A stylus for precision drawing or writing (used to be good at writing on the screen of my old Sony P910i) and the capacitive for the multi touch and ease of control.

Stylus will work with resistive touch as it is only the pressure that is required to make the 2 films touch. Capacitive touch relies on the flow of current. Also why you can use resistive screens with gloves on but not capacitive. There are special stylus that can work with capacitive touch screens but it is special versus any hard pointy thing with a resistive.

  • Surface Capacitive touchscreen: Coated on one side with small voltage conductive layers. It has limited resolution and is often used in kiosks.
