Voice Communication from Several Remote Locations to Four Other Offices

03/08/2012 9:02 AM

Please, what is the cheapest n most practical method of connecting several remote locations to four other offices for voice communication? Could someone give a sketch of how the connection should look like and a side by side cost and technical comparison of the method of connection with using a VSAT at each of those remote locations. Note: The remote locations mostly have a maximum of 5 users while the four officer together have approximately 3000 users. Thank you.

How remote are these locations from each other? From civilization?

A telephone comes to mind. Please share with us what makes that impractical, and anything else you have not told us. Location in the world, available resources...

Telephone conference call, Voice over IP. Try an internet search for more information.

This sounds like a request for a quote, we don't quote here on this news and discussion group.

Please supply more information. Since you mention VSAT are we to assume the locations are very remote and that telephone, internet and possibly point-to-point radio connections are not practical.

More information please.

Point to point radio is possible at the remote locations. My request is not for quote. I only want a comparison of whichever method of connection is advised wit using a VSAT at the remote locations. This is because few of the remote locations have VSAT installed for the purpose of voice calls but the high cost of annual subscription seems to be making that idea not cost effective hence the need to look for another practical and cost effective way of linking those locations. I only need someone to give me a clue I can build my research upon. Thank you.

You still haven't given distances and geographical limitations, so again all we can offer is a guess.

So, given the available information look in to point-to-point radio, just be aware some systems (operating on certain frequencies) may require a licencing fee in addition to the hardware cost and additional repeater stations may also be required (which could quickly make the project too expensive).

Point-to-point laser may also be an option to look at as would point-to-point microwave.

Running a phone line may also be a potentially viable option in some cases.

Ideally you would want to create a remote site communication link to the nearest phone or internet network so you can then use that for the rest of the communications link.

Thank u for the piece of information. The distance of each of the remote locations to the main office where all connection should be to is average of 1000km.

Well then you are stuck with VSAT or some other satellite-based service unless you want to buy about say 100-200 repeater stations for each remote office link complete with their own solar panels and batteries you have to replace every 2-4 years to get that range.

Cost, say $500,000 with a yearly maintenance cost of say $10,000-$100,000 a year per remote office link (depending on terrain). Additionally if one repeater station goes down you lose the link.

Remote as in:

a) across a parking lot

b) across a really big parking lot

c) across a really big field (kind of the same thing, isn't it?)

d) across a continent

e) over the river and through the woods

f) across an ocean

g) across a sea (silly, isn't it?)

h) across the solar system

i) I can do this all day long

j) have you tried yelling?
