Solving formula

05/06/2007 11:13 AM

Greetings from the Bayou Country again,

can one of you assist me again in solving this formula?

L = md - (md/4 (x3)

I need to know how to use this formula to solve for md.

EXAMPLE:

md - (md/4 x (3) = L

80 -(80/4x (3) = 20

If I know L but I need to know md, how do I isolate md alone of the other side of the formula?

Thank you so very much again.

L = md - (md/4*3)

multiply all terms by 4

4L = 4md - 3md

simplify RHS

4L = md

swap em round

md = 4L

Re: Solving formula

Hello ,

There may be some confusion in this as this not just a regular math problem.

I am cutting into a peice of netting like shown below.

i use an assortment of tapers to cut into the netting to make certain shapes.

I am now faced with a very difficult design that requires many different tapers.

i need to be able to calculate Mesh Deep (MD) in the middle of an enormous sheet of netting in whcih these tapers will be changing.

1px3b =2.5 md and 1.5 mesh Loss each time it is used

2px3b = 3.5 md and 1.5 mesh Loss each time it is used

3px6b = 6 md and 3 mesh Loss each time it is used

etc.

Using your revised formula a piece of netting 100md , cut with a taper of 1point x 6 bars which is shown as md/4x3, I have 25 sets of this taper across a 100md piece of net.

I lose 3 mesh (which in net terminology is equal to 6 bars or 1/2 meshes) every time I use the 1px6b taper.

100 md cut with a 1px6b taper will yield 25 sets of this taper and 75 meshes in LOSS

If I use your formula , it tells me there was 4 x Loss for the MD or 300md .....which i know is incorrect.

Can you look this over again using the new information?

Thank you so very much.

OOOpps...

My Big Error.

Your formula does work with this .

Excuse my ignorance.

I have many "homemade" formulas for these type calculations but i wanted to see if we could do something more precise.

i was not paying attention. I need to add something to this to this as I need another value in this calculation.

Please excuse my mistake.

My error completely.

Thank you again.

I am going to post the corrected version later this week.

Why save a cow there are more cows than fish.

Most fish we eat are top or near top predators in their niches. We eat few scavenger vegetarian fish in bulk, although there are a few, like sardines.

Eating fish is analagous to hunting and eating the various cat species (lions, tigers,cheetahs etc) on land. We would soon run out of cats of all types.

The predators are far fewer than their prey Predators tend to be long lived and have low rates of reproduction. The older fish lay more eggs than youmger fish since egg production has a cubed factor in there.

I see large long line pocket nets like this as a form of overhunting of a wild population that has already led to the collapse or near collapse of fisheries around the world. Europe as a group is totally unable to manage their declining fish stocks. They now issue quotas higher than the actual catch = big decline. So soon Europe will see few fish from her areas. Of course, they travels the seas, and extinguish fish from one area after the other. Canada has a similar problem. The fishermen are all on welfare and blame anyone but themselves. This year it is the seals and europeans they blame. The COD are gone from most areas of Canada's waters. Are they like passenger pigeons, dependant on a critical mass to breed? Once passenger pigeons fell below their critical species population, they were finished off by hawks and their own biology.

Re: Solving formula

To all Concerned,

My byline of eat more fish, save a cow is mostly for humor.

My net designs and nets are now built for scientific purposes only as I no longer cater to the commercial sector.

Over the years I have designed many nets for sea food as well as nets to protect crops from birds, nets to capture endangered animals for THEIR protection and safety nets for construction workers.

Over the years my nets have fed countless hundreds of thousands of people from North and South America, New Zealand to Finland, to Japan , China and Russia. I do not apologize for this. It is what I did to support my family.

In later years I have designed nets for 3rd world nations in Asia and Africa to raise fish and capture fish ON A SMALL FAMILY SCALE , so they would not starve. This was done through several international organizations and was all donated time and effort.

No offense, but how much time have any of you donated to helping underpriviledged persons in the world with YOUR skills?

I now design nets SOLELY for scientific research. My skills, (or what is left of them after a severe cerebral stroke 8 years ago), are used for SAVING fish and their environment. I work on projects that involve numerous species of endangered fish and other marine life.

Back -in-the-day...... I fished in all the 7 Seas of the world and have seen first hand the rape and pillage of our oceans. I created some of the gear used to do this..........but now I am making amends in my own way.

I am at present working on several projects , one of them is to test benthic organisms in 9,000 feet of water ......they have a concern that polution has reached into these depths and my gear is needed to quietly and economically assist in finding out if these fish are affected.

I'll make less money on this project than most folks here make on a one day consulting trip. I do it because it is the RIGHT thing to do.

Since my stroke I am left with some missing information. This forum allows me to ask engineers to assist me in 'recovering' that data that was destroyed when 3 blood vessels ruptured in my head 8 years ago.

Aurizon, I respect you for stating your opinion and listing your name. Guest , did not have the "rocks" to do so. By assisting me , you are NOT contributing to the demise of marine life but helping to rebuild it!

* I am not building a pocket net as you mentioned but a 20 Meter Misago type deepwater benthic sampling net that has to be extremely streamlined and hydro dynamic in its shape so as to drop almost 2 miles to the ocean floor and land right side up.

Curiously enough, I wonder how many engineers working for chemical companies or manufacturing companies that pollute our air and water......are also asking questions here? Is anyone questioning their motives?

This is an engineering forum. Lets keep politics out of it. There are thousands of other forums where these issues can be discussed. CR4 is a godsend to someone like myself who at one time had a "sharp" mind but now has pockets of dead space.

Hope all is clear now and I still say.......save a cow, eat more fish!

......and no one has better recipes for cooking fish than the Cajun folks!

Re: Solving formula

This is a good concept. All wild fish resources exist in a predatory balance, as do wild land animals we eat, like deer.

To draw from that resource we are taking the food from the mouths of others higher in that chain, so we need to understand the full ecosystem to see how what we take impacts what is left. It seems we are taking several levels of predators, middle and upper tier. The lower levels are too small for us, or taste bad, save for the various sardine types of fish.

We need to think about fertilizing the ocean with land waste in the amount we harvest so we do not impoverish the food chain. This can mean food type garbage as well as cellulosic garbage, as long as it is finely macerated and does not drop as lumpr nor is ti spread on coral areas. The deeps sound like good spots for that. Some have tried the addition of iron. Waste pickle liquor FeCl2 is fine for this. As a small addition to the sea already full of Cl- ions and Fe++ ions will be a welcome critical nutrient.

FeCl2 pickle liquor is toxic waste in fresh water areas.

As to nets, can you create an orientation bias with incompressible floats filled with a low density non compressed solid/fluid. Air filled would be squeezed flat in the deeps.

Re: Solving formula

md - (md/4 x 3 ) = L

removing the brackets;

md-3md/4 = L

rearranging and 'md' being = 1 md

1 md - 3/4 md =L

md ( 1 - 3/4 ) = L

1/4 md = L

1 md = 4L

md = 4L
