American Industry

05/06/2007 9:03 PM

Why is it so many posts and blogs assume that the US is always in the lead when it comes to industrial innovation when they are more often lagging behind by several years.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Maybe the up and coming countries feel the pressure of necessity more?

Look at the development of a small cheap mass market elecric car. The USA just doesn't want one...(unless it becomes a fashion statement)...the emerging markets do.

American technology.....BIG AND HEAVY..like their country..just look at their cars ....Huge..at least 8 cylinders...at least 2000cc...awesome cars...but they have the horsepower of a european car with 4cylinders and 1600cc(there are exeptions)...that's because they have plenty of fuel...

Vald, your assumptions are, well, just that - assumptions. And they are inaccurate, ill-informed, generalized, stereotyped and bigoted assumptions at that. I think this may be the result of your watching too many rap videos, as evidenced by your catchphrase (at the end of your posts), which is crude, mysoginistic, offensive, and stupid. I am the first to say it, but not the first (and certainly not the only one) thinking it. If you have nothing of value to contribute, please go troll somewhere else.

general mind set is America is stinking rich and a free countery and you can sell your new inventions, products what ever for big bucks. secondly America accepts any body with brains to invent as long as it serves Americas interest even criminal natzeis just look what happend after world war 2 all inventions like jetfighter ME 262 along with its desigeners hoped to America for big bucks. even AT&T the same story even to day the same mind set continues

Yes, it's true that the U.S. relied upon the services of ex-Nazis such as Werner von Braun. But what was the alternative? Handing over all of Germany's aerospace scientists to the Soviets? I think not.

You also write, Guest, that "America accepts any body with brains to invent as long as it serves America's interest". Again, you're correct - but that's the way a sensible immigration policy should work (i.e., to the benefit of the host country).

As for the original question - "Why is it so many posts and blogs assume that the US is always in the lead" - I disagree with the inference that this forum doesn't give a fair shake to the rest of the world. In fact, whenever you find a story about cutting-edge technology that originates outside of the U.S., I invite you to post it on CR4. I also invite you to become a member so that you can exchange ideas with engineers around the globe.

Hi Moose,

what plane is this one?

sorry to say so, but your reply is wrong!

This is the I Ae Pulqui I

It was developed in Argentina in 1946, and flew for the first time in before 1950.

As I know you like reading about history of aviation, you can get more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I.Ae._27_Pulqui_I

Best regards, Cosme

I'm an American.

RMC,

Please check your facts before you slam my country, AT&T was started by Alexander Gram Bell, an American, The jet fighter was German and when the war ended the military of both America and Russia completed what Hitler started. The Mig and the American Saber were almost identical when completed. (Spoils of war go to the victor). Automobile-American, Airplane-American, Internet-American, I can go on all day..

I don't know what country your from because you hind behind "Guest" but do America a favor and stay there.

If the Alexender Graham Bell we are talking about here is the one who invented the telephone please take note that the patent is canadian and that alexendre was a canadian resident with his family though he was living in the states for his research. But if you really want to be disapointed I think he's born in england so he's far from being American. You can get his whole chronology to learn more about him on this canadian gouvernement site. ( sorry if it wasn't the good bell you were talking about )

Born in England, not a surprise, who wasn't back then or now. You can move to Italy, but you can not become an Italian, you can move to England, but you can not become English, you can move to France, but you can not become French.... but you can move to America and become an AMERICAN.

All we ask is, if you do move to America, then love it or don't move.

I think Frank Whittle (an English man) would argue about who 'invented' the jet engine!

There was certainly a race between him Germans!

(Next thing we know, someone will claim the Americans won the battle of Agincourt..lol)

Re: American Industry

A challenge! Right then, a definition -

A sports car is an automobile designed for performance driving. Most sports cars are rear-wheel drive, have two seats, two doors, and are designed for precise handling, acceleration, and aesthetics. A sports car's dominant considerations are: superior road handling, braking, maneuverability, low weight, and high power, rather than passenger space, comfort, and fuel economy.

Ok.

Can you name 3 US sports cars that meet this criteria?

I can name 2.

15 UK, 4 Italian, 3 German and at least 2 French.

I will name them upon request.

Oh, and if you are thinking A/C Cobra here, it's English.

Assumptions? I don't think so. By the way, doesn't rap have a silent C?

Vald, the quote at the end of your post is in poor taste. Should we assume that all Greek engineers hate women? Of course not. So please don't stereotype about my country either.

Do I hear a little envy in your voice....

"Slap your woman"? Come on over here and let a real man see you do this. If a CR4 monitor is reading this, I believe in freedom of speech, but this end phrase is degrading to women of all countries. CR4 should not let Vald post again with such an end phrase. This is an engineering site, not a learn how to abuse your woman site. As a real man I don't abuse women, and I don't condone it in any form.

I do not agree with Vald's statements, nor with the kind of replies he got.

Let's try to see things from another angle: what if Vald expressed his thoughts incorrectly for the simple reason English is not his mother tongue?

Doc,

Are you sure you're not a lawyer?

Vald's statements are quite clear, both to himself and everyone else (including you). To propose otherwise is grasping at straws (weak, lame, sad, pathetic, take your pick). Or is there some positive spin on "slapping your woman" that we are missing? Please don't compound the issue by insulting our intelligence.

Please NEVER mention the word LAWYER to a doc!

On the other hand, I honestly looked for the paragraph where the slapping issue was mentioned, but I did not find it (was it censored?)

I am just talking about the statement about inefficiency of large american cars and having a lot of fuel! I have an explanation about that, but can't post it now.

Re: American Industry

I see many angry replied to this, I question that but I will give a simple explanation to your question.

The North American market has a lot of money to spend, what we call disposable income, but the return policies are very difficult for manufactures.

Many store allow return of product for no reason once so every, for a very long period of time, say three months.

Hey wear it out then return it and get a new one, that is very difficult for those who supply the products.

The lesson here is the product must be perfect. How do you get to that.

Sell the product in countries where there is a very poor return policy.

China, you buy it, I show you it works, that is it, don't complain.

So the big companies design, produce, and sell it to lesser markets first.

The allusion is that the USA market is behind, but they reap the results of those sale to other markets where the product has been tested and the bugs are found and fixed.

The Second part is the conspiracy by American companies to hold back technology for the plain reason that if you give the public everything up front , what do you sell them next month or even next week.

Look at Mobile phone air time, the USA pays the highest per minute in the world.

And the USA has the worst Mobile phone sets in the world.

Puzzle that one Batman and you out there who answer with all these nationalistic rhetoric get a grip, you are used by your in country manufactures as test subject.

You look at the USA and shake your head as you are paying the bill for develop to companies in your country, your countrymen are screwing you.

Maybe I should have a Avatar? what say folks

Something with sunken yellow eyes, long finger nails and a not so happy smile.

Now I figure out why everyone was so pissed off:

Vald must have had a "Signature" in which he said something about beating a women or so....

Due to the negative feedback he had, he removed before I made my posting
