Heat Soaked Tempered Glass

03/11/2012 11:12 PM

Dear Experts,

Is it possible to differentiate the heat soaked tempered glass and tempered glass? I understand tempered glass has compressive strength of more than 10,000psi. If it is heat soaked after tempered process, will this affect the compressive strength?

thank you

Noel

Yes, it is possible.

The heat soaked glass will still be in one piece after heat soaking.

Hi Lyn,

Excellent and thanks.

Wondering how to identify the value add to the tempered glass on this heat soaked process. ie increase strength? mahy be from 15,000psi to 20,000psi?

Appeciate to hear from you again.

Heat soaking does not add strength. It exposes defects that would otherwise cause the glass to fail in service.

This information is easily found by searching.

PRODUCT BULLETIN: HEAT SOAKING

"This causes glass containing nickel sulfide inclusions to break in

the heat soak chamber, thus reducing the risk of potential field

breakage."

Will not increase compressive strength it may decrease it though.

As Lyn said it is just a test. It's to find nickel sulfide inclusions that may cause glass to fail in the field.

Added value is to have glass that has less chance of failing in the field. Doesn't eliminate all the defects that may cause tempered glass to fail. Doesn't even completely eliminate failure do to the nickel sulfide inclusions just reduces it. That value is seen where the cost of labor and equipment need is high to do replacements

Glass is unstable frozen mass and does not have any crystal structure. Effect of this on

1. Heat soak tempered glass : Based on glass composition some percent of the glass will transformed to crystal structure ( call glass ceramics) and then if we perform tempering then we will have lower compressive strength and will increase young modulus of the glass and will deter glass during failure to small tinny pieces

2. Thermal tempering on the other hand of pure glass will not allow conversion of glass to glass ceramics and will have highest compressive strength. This is good thing if we are laminating the glass it breaks in smaller pieces and stay sticking to lamination material and human injury is not as bad as non tempered glass
