Integrated Process Control and Safety System

03/13/2012 9:46 PM

I plan to have an integrated Process Control and Safety System due to low numbers of input/output (I/O) - less than 50. It will utilize a set of safety PLC to handle process control, safety instrumented system and fire & gas detection devices. Is this violating any codes and standards such as IEC61508/11?

Thank you for directing me to wiki.

Just to clarify further. What I meant was, to use one PLC for all 3 functions (process control, SIS and F&G detection systems). Of course with redundancy.

So, if one were to lose power to the PLC, the thing will shut down safely, and if one were to lose power to the entire control system, the thing will shut down safely. Hard-wired backups are one way, though there is another: it sounds like it's a candidate for the Inherent Safety concept at flowsheet design stage: small inventories, no runaway reactions, and so-on.
