Voltage output 400 Volts against 410 volts in meter reading

03/20/2012 2:38 PM

Hi all,

Correct me if my understanding is wrong, as a rule High voltage low ampere/Low voltage high Ampere, If I set the 3 phase generator voltage output raised to 410 volts instead of 400 volts, is the kilowatthour meter reading will give lower consumption reading as it was getting from a current transformer to register? In short can I achieved less energy reading consumptions at the end of the month if i will do this? using the same amount of load and time of usage?

Thanks

1. Your kWhr meter uses voltage, current, and the angle between the two (power factor) and time to continuously calculate the amount of energy being consumed.

2. The amount of energy consumed is a function of the type of load, so your generalization won't work; i.e., if your load is purely resistive then raising the voltage causes the current goes up linearly due to Ohm's law (I=E/R), on the other hand if it's a motor then depending upon the type of motor, the thing it's driving and the process conditions at the end of what's being driven, you may find that the current tracks the voltage, or goes opposite to it, and probably not in the linear fashion of a resistive load.

3. The way you achieve less energy consumption is by lowering the load, because that's where the energy gets converted into work (ignoring losses before anyone goes on a tangent about that).

Couldn't agree more.

But a question for the OP, "Anonymous Poster #1".

How is it that you have your own generator (because you speak of tweaking the output) and yet you apparently have a kWh meter? Are you sending yourself a bill every month? If so, what happens when you bounce a check to yourself? Do you shut down your generator until you pay yourself back?

Inquiring minds want to know!

RAM, your reply was very imformative and clearly understandable... no reason why you've got 4 GA mine supposedly the 5th GA one however due to I posted my question as anonymously i am not allowed to vote. many thanks for that. your line # was been known very well as my expertise except line 1 & 2 were considered additional to my knowledge.

JRaef, I am a member of this forum and I just posted my question anonymously because I am thinking that one of our member is the lone owner of the generators that was sitted in our resorts and find that I have the intension request to raised the generator output to achieved my purpose which was clearly answered by RAM. anyway thanks for your reply that doesn't help nothing but, throw back intensely ridiculos question to my stupid crazy question (maybe on your personal opinion). Cheers mate!
