Thrust Pad Reconditioning

03/21/2012 2:09 AM

during boiler feed booster pump overhaul, we found scratches on thrust bearing pads.

as no spare pads are available, how can i recondition the pads in short time???

which material should i use for lapping these pads??

I have dealt with "white metal" bearings, the radial and axial ones but let me express that only reconditioning I know is to do blue matching using bench plate, scrap the pads to get right "adhesion" and that is all.

There are two sets of pads. These are working on active side and those ones working on inactive side. Certainly, these from active side are more important and if this is possible you can exchange the pads. Do you have any pictures of pads with scratches? How deep they are?

The condition of the pads is not the bit to worry about. What is the condition of the thrust sitting on the pad and what was the cause?

Reconditioning on a lapping machine/ hand lapping may get you out of trouble short term. You must look for the primary cause.

Thrust pads (white metal line) can be reconditioned but do find the reason for scratches. Do you find any hard metal particle in the bearing or lube oil system. What is the condition of the thrust collar? You should diagnose the problem before re-conditioning of thrust pads only.

Simplest way is to clean light scorring marks and check the blue match surface area of the pad. Even with scorring or scretch marks if the blue match area is sufficient as per machine protocol, thrust pad will work.
