20 to 24 pin power supply

05/07/2007 8:11 AM

1) Can I use a 20 pin power supply in place of 24 pin.

20 pin is from Celeron motherboard and and i want to use it on AMD 64 motherboard

2) If so do you center the plug leaving two open pin on each end or offset it to one side or the other?

thank you for prompt response

Branson

heh heh, ummm... sure.

But only if you promise to video the results and post it on Youtube.

Actually - no. (I should say NO!!) If you really want to try this, you should get the datasheets for both power supplies and see if they are at all compatible, first. Then see if there's anyway to connect the 20 pin device up where the 24 pin device went.

They are the same except for the plug. And they actually sell an adapter to connect the two.

I replaced my motherboard recently and could use either connector. I had to FTFM (read the friendly manual) several times before I found the instructions for each pinout. If that information is not in your manual spend the couple bucks for a new power supply.

Seems the last power supply I bought had the 24 pin molex type connector that would break apart at the last 4 pins and could be used on a 20 pin motherboard.

Yani is correct, a new PS allows itself to be used on older and newer boards. An old supply may not be used on a newer board.

So your answer is NO!

You will damage the mainboard.....

The extra pins are there for higher power requirement of the CPU, RAM and video card.

1. Yes 20 & 24 pins are compatible.

2. Just remove 21 -24 pin attached connector.

3. Insert 20 p9in connector to the MB 20 pin Power Socket

4. Insert 4 pin connector to a 4pin socket on MB [it may be just above CPU.

5. If there is no 4pin socket on MB, leave it alone.

Note: On good MBs on bootup you will receive a pop-up asking about the connector . Act accordingly.

Thank you for your prompt replies. My problem actually began because the local shops didn't have any 24 pin power supplies on there shelf.

I found one today at Best Buy.
