I once read a story about a portuguese ( pronounced porto-gee ) sponge fisherman,,,er,, diver...but it was off the coast of Florida,,,,in the Gulf,,,,,does that count?

Hey, yeah, Tarpon Springs. I used to go to the restaurants around there. They were mostly Greek, though. (Not complaining - they were really good restaurants.)

Probably not much help, though, re: universities in Spain or Portugal.

Yes, of course you are right, it was Greek sponge divers....I was thinking of Spencer Tracy who was a portugese fisherman...or he played one....in the movie, not the book....anyway,,,I don't think he ever went to school...
