Orifice Plate Sizing

04/05/2012 9:48 AM

Hello,

Can someone help with orifice plate sizing, I cannot seem to get my head around it (I keep getting approx 3mm, it isn't right!!!

I need a flow to a condenser of 50 m3/h of water.

Flow before orifice (unknown)

P1 is approx 3.5 Barg

P2 (assumption) 3.1 Barg

Pipe Diameter before and after orifice 80mm

Water density 998 kg/m3 @ 25 Deg C

water cp 0.982

Temp Avg 25 Deg Celcius

Cd = 0.62 (coulson and richardson volume 1)

Mr. Daniel says 53 point whatever mm at 0.40 bar dp, warning that the beta is slightly high:

your mileage might vary with whatever 80 mm pipe is:

Thanks,

Where did you you get this calculator from

beta i am presuming is the pipe diamter and orifce ratio??? what effect would that usually have???

The pressure drop is an assumption from another part of the plant which is almost identical but the pipework is bigger and the height is a bit lower.

its sch 40 CS (dn80) 3 inch

Sorry to be cheeky any chance you could also check it for 80M3/h.

Thanks

How about a nice modern vortex-shedding flowmeter instead, Guv? Orifice plates are out-of-the-ark these days.

That is something new, will have a look into it thanks. But do not really need a flow meter. just need to get a rough flow.

sounds like a plan, but dont have enough connecctions in my junction boxes and also will only need to be done once as will not need to change it after that. plus abit short on budget spent too much money already.
