You must pray to great thunder god for mercy....

If that doesn't work then follow linked instructions....

Very good link to lightning system configuration and layout.

Cotton balls in the ears make good thunder arresters.

Cotton balls are OK but try these Lyndoor "Thunder Arrestor/Boom Box Muffs" - be done with those nuisance thunder strikes forever!

Seriously though, try this page.

Does reading this OP remind anyone else of Kehaar (Watership Down)?

It may just be an interesting enough film to keep the boys attention for a while. Pretty good movie, but the book is better (as I recall, anyway. It's been years). If you are a video rental sort of family unit, I would give it a thumbs up (for whatever that may be worth).

Ok,

We do pay-per-view but there's a rental shack just down the street.

May give it a spin, thanks.

This is a serious safety question.

The problem with lightening is to ground it as soon as possible to a heavy ground.

Taking a ground wire from the roof to the ground is a lot of wire.

Best to ground it to the water in the upstairs toilet tank, thats a very large ground

If you have PEX tubing, you have 0 ground potential as most housing today is all PEXO2. Which means a ground plate and bussing and many feet of COPPER, DO NOt Use Aluminum!

Hi from Sleepy,

I have beeen involved with Lightning protection of many buildings and structures over many years.

Good Lightning Protection requires

1 Good Lightning rod(s).

Various papers talk to radius of the rod tip and, special materials to make the rod especially attractive to lightning strikes. One remedy that has been used is radioactive materials in the rod to ionize the air around appropriately.

Connected via

2 Linked wiring ( avoiding as many bends as practical as the lightning strike when it comes carries many VHF components and these must be minimised.

3 A very good earth.

earthpit as:

http://www.stonetechnicalgroup.co.uk/downloads/typicalearthpit.pdf

Values of earth resistamce/Impedance neeed to be examined in the literature.

The whole to provide a conical cone of protection which should minimise lightning issus to the structure being protected.

The conical zones of protection were superseded by the

electrogeometrical model in the 1980 edition of NFPA 78, an example of the NFPA Technical

Committee on Lightning Protection keeping up with the current developments in the lightning

protection field.

Good Luck

Sleepy

From Sleepy,

I have done some more reading which goes beyond my work a day knowledhe so will place it here.

The Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_rod

Legrand: http://www.legrand.com/files/fck/File/pdf/Power_guide/EX29011.pdf

There is much, much more. Other references refer to the roliing nature of lightning, how to predict the size of the ball and so on.

I was going to talk about zones of protection but these have been replaced by incorporating an electromagntic model and in one case by offering Rolling models of lightning.

I was trying to offer you references to all of these but my fingers became unstuck (or stuck) as the case may be so I will send this as is and offer to dig further if required.

Good Luck

Sleepy

Lightning rods can have Radio active isotopes included which can make them more attractive to Lightning vis a vis the rest of the structure.
