How to Choose Pump Shaft Sealing

04/07/2012 11:53 PM

When pumping liquid bitumen from a twin screw pump at 180 deg c. with 10kg/cm2 pressure, what type of shaft sealing arrangment is preferable, gland packing with special aramid glands or mechanical seal?

I was using a pump for pumping bitumen from storage tank to autoclave . But it was a failure due to warming/heating of bitumen uniformly with in the tank , in the pipe line and in the pump .

But the temperature range we used were much below as 70-80 degree c. At this temperature bitumen was semi liquid , not liquid.

Why not contact the pump supplier? They should have enough history on their products to provide you with the best recommendations as to materials of construction.

Suppliers will claim many things, but in reality few only will work out.

Especially when it comes to product selling. If its a solution/result sales, we can get the right one.

Realizing that the Manufacturer wants success for you and their product it is not likely that they will recommend something that would not work and most manufacturers shaft seal warranty is 24 hours due to them not knowing if you at the facility are actually pumping what they designed the pumps for.

If you in fact change the seal to what you may or others may imply that is right and the pump fails this will void all or any warranties for the pump if there are any to be maintained at this point.

Hot bitumen is pumped all the time in western Canada, the tar sands pump it in all sizes to big as a house.

Look at some trade publications that serve that industry, or use these searches, just click an image of a pump like yours and explore. Same for manufacturers

There's more to this. The pump is jacketed / heated, yes? It (pump / tank(s) / pipes get cold sometimes, yes? AC (bitumen) gets way viscous (hard, even) <140 deg. C or so. Lyn is correct, your pump supplier is on the hook for this. Heck of a time to ask with the pump all selected & whatnot. Wouldn't be too amazed if the answer is an externally lubricated mechanical seal (leave a wrench, box of packing, sharp knife and cheap shoes nearby if you go with packing of any variety).

Answer back with particulars if you want same.

As per one of the reputed pump manufacturer for such services, Gland Packing is standard but if purchaser requires, pump can be furnished with Mechanical seals.
