Calculated Blind Flange Thickness Versus Standard

04/08/2012 11:47 AM

I just wonder why calculated blind flange thickness using ASME section VIII division I is higher that standard blind thickness as per ANSI B16.5?

let say:

Material A105

Design Pressure: 102 barg

Design Temperature: 38 Degree C

Gasket: Spiral wound

Rating: 600#

By using ASME VIII formula, my calculated thickness is 134mm

Meanwhile, the standard flange thickness according ANSI B16.5 is 101.6mm

Any body can tell me what is the reason?

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think it's related to the allowable stress difference in the 2 codes.

Did you check ASME B31.3? I believe the two blind flanges match in those two codes.

I think you're talking about the difference in pipe flanges (ASME B16.5) and blind flanges that can be used as vessel heads (UG-34).
