its a good question, but difficult to answer, it depend on your country, where are you from ? do your country has hdtv system programme?

which type of tv set do you prefer? lcd or plasma ?

In our china, 37--54" lcd or plasma begine come into ordinary people's home. but only serval cities begine their hd progamme.

if your city hast got hd broadcast, you will wst when you buy it now.

right?

Answer emphatically NO not just now. Things are moving just too quickly for now and a whole new bunch of transmission changes are on the way. Plasma sets are too energy hungry and will not last for as long as many seem to believe. New types of LCD are in the pipe line, I have been in the TV trade for some twenty plus years and would not put my own money into this technology until pushed into a very tight corner at gun point and given a free set. As of this time it is a BIG waste of money.

You are going to be ahead of the curve qith 1080p right now. As the fellow from China points out, most broadcasts aren't in 1080p. Also, the frame rates that the DVDs play back are only 30fps, not 60 fps, so you're not going to get the content from media either.

If you spend the money now they you'll be ready later, but how much later I don't know.

I recently purchased a 1080i x 50" Panasonic TH-50PH9UK, plasma it is a huge difference in watching HD content programs. For more information than you'de ever want to know about this stuff goto http://www.avsforum.com/ tons of info there.

With the plasma, out of the box it was setup to be very bright, way more than my room demands, so I turned it down. From what I have read if you "break in" the set and don't right out of the box view content that is static you should not have any issues with burn in.

Interesting. I was down at Circuit City just last Saturday and the first question I was asked by the salesperosn was if I watch sprots. The anser was no, but when asked why, he told me that the graphics displayed during games would casue burn in. I asked about the "ticker" at the bottom of the screen on channer;s like Fox News and he said that would also cause burn-in. He didn's say anything about "proper" break-in reducing or eliminating burn-in.

The HD 1080p picture is fabulous. I'd love to have one of the new plasma or LCD monitors, 50 inch minimum. But I think I'll for the next gneration machines...

In my mind, I remember the LCD's response time is 12mS, so if you watch speed sport, there is a sweep phynomina. lag or delay.

But now the seller told me the best lcs's respone time less 1mS, I dont know if its true, but after I seach I find there will be less dynamic range at the time response.

so YOu will not watch wider latitude of film , in a word, crt is still some better feature than they are at present.

another words, the lcd has a soft light compare with crt tv set. it suit to children and old men.

In china 2008 olympic game, we shall transmit HD tv signal to world, its true. by the time you can watch the high quality game.

Come on guys...1080p is ahead of the curve for broadcast TV, without a doubt. However, the Playstation 3 will play certain games in 1080p, and games in the pipe will be at 60 fps. Blu-Ray discs will also play at 1080p (most likely HD-DVDs as well) and look unbelievable.

The real issue is on a 37" screen will you detect a difference between 720p, 1080i or 1080p? The answer is not likely...at that screen size spend your dollars on the best 720p or better set and if you're into TV, you'll be ecstatic.

A digital feed will be required from cable/staellite, or a good over the air antenna. Without a good feed and enough content, there is no point in upgrading to this type of TV since SD material often looks less compelling on a plasma/lcd/RPT than on a CRT.

Lots of good comments.

How big a screen are you going to have? I doubt that you will be able to see much difference between 1080I and 1080P on a smaller screen. To benefit from 1080P resolution you will first need a HD-DVD or a BlueRay player. They both can output 1080P.

I would first go to some place that sells HD televisions and have them play some movies for you in both formats and decide for your self if there is enough difference in the picture to justify a 1080P TV. Here in the US the price difference between the two formats is not that much, I would go with the higher resolution and buy a HD-DVD or a BlueRay player, but I love action movies.

The real answer to that lies on how much money you want to spend. 1080p prices have come down a ways lately.

You can also save money by buying a "monitor" instead of a "television" which means you will need a cable or satelite box for the TV. (Which most people will have anyway especially if they have a DVR)

But if you can afford it, I say definately go for the 1080p since it will be a lot longer before it is outdated.
